Paul Onuachu Lights Up Turkish Derby: Trabzonspor Stuns Galatasaray with Record-Setting Performance

Trabzonspor secured a vital 2-1 victory over Süper Lig leaders Galatasaray at Papara Park, a result that significantly tightened the Turkish title race. The thrilling encounter saw pivotal contributions from Nigerian international stars Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu, while Galatasaray grappled with the absence of their influential striker, Victor Osimhen.
Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu was at the heart of Trabzonspor's early success, opening the scoring just four minutes into the game. Rising above the Galatasaray defence, Onuachu headed in a precise cross from Wagner Pina, showcasing his aerial dominance, strength, and impeccable timing. This landmark goal marked Onuachu's first against Galatasaray, completing a sweep of having scored against all three of Turkey's biggest clubs – Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas. Trabzonspor head coach Fatih Tekke emphasized Onuachu's importance beyond just scoring, particularly highlighting his invaluable ability to hold up play in the first half. This allowed Trabzonspor to relieve pressure, enable teammates to move forward, and maintain control when Galatasaray pressed.
Onuachu's performance against Galatasaray is a microcosm of his outstanding season. The Nigerian striker is enjoying the best campaign of his career, tallying an impressive 24 goals and providing two assists in just 26 appearances across all competitions. With 22 goals in the league alone, he is currently the Süper Lig's top scorer and firmly on track for the Golden Boot. His influence extends beyond statistics; at 2.01 meters tall, Onuachu has become one of the most formidable forwards in the league, dominating aerial duels and offering Trabzonspor a crucial direct attacking option. He has demonstrated remarkable consistency, including a run of goals in 10 straight matches and an outstanding 13 goals in his last 10 games since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations. Onuachu is also closing in on a significant club record for the most league goals by a foreign player in a single season, a mark of 25 set by Shota Arveladze, with his current tally of 41 overall goals for Trabzonspor positioning him as a club legend in the making.
Conversely, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk candidly admitted that the absence of Victor Osimhen played a significant role in his side's damaging defeat. Osimhen was sidelined, recovering from surgery after fracturing his forearm during a UEFA Champions League clash. Without their influential forward, Galatasaray struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm, suffering their fifth defeat in a match he has missed this season. Buruk elaborated on Osimhen's importance, drawing parallels with Onuachu for Trabzonspor, noting that players who play regularly develop crucial habits and their absence impacts team dynamics. Before his injury, Osimhen was one of Europe's most dangerous forwards, with 19 goals and seven assists in 29 appearances across all competitions, including a strong showing in the Champions League with seven goals. Galatasaray is targeting his return for the crucial derby against Fenerbahçe later this month.
Despite Wilfried Singo's equalizer for Galatasaray early in the second half, another Nigerian, Chibuike Nwaiwu, secured the winning goal for Trabzonspor in the 62nd minute. Nwaiwu, a key player since his January transfer, headed home a precise cross from Anthony Nwakaeme. Coach Fatih Tekke later revealed this goal was the result of a deliberate tactical plan, having noticed a height advantage over Galatasaray's defenders at the front post during defensive blocks. Trabzonspor had specifically practiced making a triple run to that area and delivering the ball over the shorter players, a strategy that perfectly paid off. Nwaiwu's solid performance, both in attack and defence, further underscored his value to the team.
The victory has dramatically impacted the Süper Lig title race. Trabzonspor, now sitting just one point behind Galatasaray, have ignited belief within the squad and among their fans. With only seven games remaining in the season, this high-stakes win has positioned Trabzonspor as genuine title contenders, demonstrating their intent to challenge the reigning champions and potentially secure a path to the Champions League.
