Panic Grips Kwara: Bandits Kidnap Pregnant Women, Others in Fresh Attacks

At least 10 residents of Isapa community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State were abducted on Monday, November 24, 2025, by a group of about 20 to 30 armed men. The attackers, suspected to be herders or bandits, reportedly invaded the village around 6:00 p.m. (1805hrs), shooting sporadically and accompanied by a large herd of cattle. The incident led to a woman sustaining a gunshot wound to her leg, who has since been treated and discharged. However, some community sources also reported that an elderly woman was killed by a stray bullet during the assault.
Among those abducted were a pregnant woman, Fatima Yusuf, and two nursing mothers, Lami Fidelis (23 years old) and Haja Na Allah. Other identified victims include Talatu Kabiru (20), Magaji (six), Kande (five), Hadiza (10), Mariam (six), Saima (five), Habibat, and Sarah Sunday (22). Seven of the abductees reportedly belonged to a single family. While some initial reports indicated 11 abductees, the Kwara State Police Command later confirmed that 10 persons were kidnapped.
The Kwara State Police Command, through its spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the shooting and abduction. Police operatives swiftly mobilized to the scene after receiving a distress call at approximately 6:30 p.m. (1830hrs). In response to the gravity of the situation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, visited the Isapa community for an on-the-spot assessment. During his visit, CP Ojo met with traditional rulers, including the Onisapa of Isapa Land, Oba Gbenga Adeyeye, and Olokesa of Okesa Land, Oba Olu Fagbamila Raphael Olusegun, as well as local and youth leaders. He assured residents of intensified operational efforts to rescue the victims safely and restore confidence in the area. A massive search-and-rescue operation is currently underway, involving police tactical teams and local vigilante groups, who are combing surrounding bushes to find the victims and apprehend the culprits. The command stated that normalcy has been restored in the village, and the situation remains under strict monitoring.
This abduction follows a similar incident just a week prior, on November 18, 2025, when gunmen attacked a branch of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) at Oke Isegun in the Eruku community, also in Ekiti LGA and about 20 kilometers from Isapa. In that attack, three worshippers were killed and 38 others were abducted, though they were later rescued. The recurrence of such security breaches, despite the deployment of military personnel and other security agencies to the area, has raised concerns.
In response to the escalating security challenges, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced the formation of a cabinet-level security committee. Chaired by Deputy Governor Mr. Kayode Alabi, the committee includes key security and administrative officials. Its mandate is to midwive alternative short-to-long term solutions, design a Kwara-specific security strategy through engagements with stakeholders including traditional rulers, and submit its report within four weeks to strengthen public safety and enrich the understanding of nationwide security situations from local perspectives.
