OpenAI Turmoil: Top Robotics Lead Abandons Ship Over Controversial Pentagon Pact

Caitlin Kalinowski, a prominent hardware executive, announced her resignation from OpenAI today, stepping down from her leadership role on the company's robotics team. Her decision directly stems from OpenAI’s contentious agreement with the Department of Defense. Kalinowski voiced her strong principles in a social media post, stating, "This wasn’t an easy call. AI has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got."
Kalinowski, who previously led the augmented reality glasses team at Meta and joined OpenAI in November 2024, clarified that her departure was "about principle, not people," expressing deep respect for CEO Sam Altman and the OpenAI team. She further elaborated on X, emphasizing, "To be clear, my issue is that the announcement was rushed without the guardrails defined. It’s a governance concern first and foremost. These are too important for deals or announcements to be rushed."
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed Kalinowski’s resignation to TechCrunch, offering the company's perspective: "We believe our agreement with the Pentagon creates a workable path for responsible national security uses of AI while making clear our red lines: no domestic surveillance and no autonomous weapons. We recognize that people have strong views about these issues and we will continue to engage in discussion with employees, government, civil society and communities around the world."
The controversy surrounding OpenAI’s deal follows recent developments with another AI firm, Anthropic. Just over a week prior, discussions between the Pentagon and Anthropic fell through when Anthropic sought safeguards against its technology being used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. This led the Pentagon to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a decision Anthropic plans to challenge legally. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have affirmed their commitment to making Anthropic’s Claude accessible to non-defense customers.
In contrast, OpenAI swiftly announced its own agreement, permitting its technology to be utilized in classified environments. Company executives, in attempts to explain the deal on social media, described it as employing "a more expansive, multi-layered approach." This approach, they claimed, relies on both contractual language and technical safeguards to protect similar 'red lines' to those Anthropic had sought. Despite these assurances, the agreement appears to have negatively impacted OpenAI’s public image among some consumers.
The fallout has been observable in app usage trends, with ChatGPT uninstalls surging by 295% following the announcement. Concurrently, Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, climbed to the top of the App Store charts. As of Saturday afternoon, Claude and ChatGPT held the number one and number two positions, respectively, as free apps in the U.S. App Store, highlighting a clear shift in user preference amid the ethical debate.
