Olympics Gender Row Heats Up: Boxer Imane Khelif Slams Critics, Challenges Trump

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, a gold medalist in the women’s welterweight division at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has found herself at the heart of a significant gender eligibility controversy. Following her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to sex chromosome tests, Khelif’s case ignited a global debate regarding gender testing protocols within women’s sports. Despite the prior ruling, Khelif's Olympic triumph underscored the ongoing complexities and differing standards in international athletic governance.

The controversy deepened with the announcement from World Boxing, the organization provisionally recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and set to oversee boxing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. World Boxing has since instituted mandatory sex testing for all boxers. This policy, however, has been challenged by Khelif at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). She maintains a specific condition for her cooperation: she is willing to undergo genetic testing, but only if the process is conducted under the direct authority of the International Olympic Committee.

In an interview, Khelif affirmed her readiness to comply with necessary regulations, stating, “Of course, I would accept doing anything I’m required to do to participate in competitions. But the testing must be done by the IOC.” She emphasized a crucial need for balance, advocating for the protection of women's sports without inadvertently harming female athletes.
