Nottingham Forest Star Taiwo Awoniyi's Shocking Coventry City Transfer Deal Explodes

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to make a significant move from Nottingham Forest to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City. The 29-year-old forward, who initially joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 from Union Berlin for a then-record fee of £17.2 million ($23.2 million), is reportedly transferring for a fee in the region of €20 million (approximately £17 million or $23 million).

During his first two seasons at the City Ground, Awoniyi proved to be an instrumental figure, playing a crucial role in helping Nottingham Forest retain their Premier League status. His impactful performances quickly endeared him to the club's fanbase, earning him the status of a "cult hero" for his memorable contributions.

However, recent seasons have seen Awoniyi's playing time diminish, largely attributed to persistent injury problems and the strong form of fellow strikers such as Chris Wood and Igor Jesus. With just one year remaining on his contract, a departure from Nottingham Forest became increasingly probable as the summer transfer window progressed.

While neither club has yet made an official announcement regarding the transfer, Nottingham Forest extended a touching farewell gesture to Awoniyi on Sunday. Before their pre-season friendly against Brest at the City Ground, players and staff formed a guard of honour, acknowledging his contributions, while fans offered a heartfelt standing ovation. Forest manager Oliver Glasner praised Awoniyi, stating, "He was probably one of the loveliest guys I've met, always friendly, always smiling. Everybody in the club likes him... He always gives 100% for the team, he always gives 100% for the bench, and that's why he deserves such a farewell."

Taiwo Awoniyi departs Nottingham Forest with a record of 23 goals and six assists across 103 appearances in all competitions. His acquisition is considered a significant deal for Coventry City, as his proven experience in the Premier League is expected to make a real impact, provided he maintains his fitness. He is anticipated to join Coventry within the next couple of days and be available for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 21.

Awoniyi will become Coventry's sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Lomu Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda, and Caleb Yirenski, as the Sky Blues prepare for their return to the top flight.
