Nigeria Takes Global Stage: VP Shettima Spearheads Delegation to Key UN General Assembly

Nigeria's Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, is set to lead the country's delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States. The significant international event will take place between Monday, September 22 and Sunday, September 28, 2025. This directive comes from President Bola Tinubu, as confirmed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.
Vice-President Shettima's agenda at the UNGA is robust and multifaceted. On September 22, he is expected to participate in the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary at the UN headquarters. Following this, from September 23 to 28, he will join other world leaders and dignitaries in the high-level general debates, contributing Nigeria's perspective on pressing global issues. A key highlight of his participation will be the delivery of Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, scheduled between 3:00pm and 9:00pm New York time.
Furthermore, the Vice-President will engage in critical discussions concerning global challenges. He is slated to attend a special event on Climate for Heads of State and Government, hosted by the UN Secretary-General. This event, scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, is particularly important as Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Shettima is also scheduled to participate in a high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing, an event to be hosted by the President of Kenya on September 24. Beyond these formal sessions, the Vice-President will hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and attend various related events, fostering international cooperation and partnerships.
Upon the conclusion of the UNGA session, Vice-President Shettima's engagement will extend to Europe. He is scheduled to travel to Frankfurt, Germany, where he will meet with officials of Deutsche Bank. Following this meeting, he will return to Nigeria, concluding his official duties.
