Nigeria Soars to Brazil: Direct Flights Kicking Off After Historic Aviation Deal
The federal governments of Nigeria and Brazil have formally signed a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), establishing a direct air connectivity framework between the two nations. This landmark agreement was concluded in Brasília, with Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Transport (also referred to as Minister of Ports and Airports), Silvio Costa Filho (or Silvio Filhos), affixing their signatures. The signing event was witnessed by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, underscoring the high-level commitment to this strategic partnership.
This agreement is anticipated to unlock fresh avenues for trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and Brazil. It aims to foster stronger economic integration, facilitate deeper cultural ties, and enhance diplomatic cooperation between these two significant economies on their respective continents. The Special Adviser, Media to the Minister of Aviation, Tunde Moshood, highlighted that this BASA represents a strategic milestone, demonstrating President Bola Tinubu’s administration's dedication to expanding Nigeria's global partnerships and creating an enabling environment for commerce and mobility.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his country's readiness to strengthen ties with Nigeria across multiple sectors, including aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development. The agreement formalizes a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) previously signed during President Tinubu's visit to Brazil, which included a delegation of senior cabinet members such as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Onoh Ojukwu; Minister of Aviation, Olorogun Keyamo; and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari. The MOU was described as a crucial step in bolstering bilateral relations.
