Tinubu Decorates Disu As New IGP And He Vows End to Impunity

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday officially decorated Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police, tasking him with restoring public trust, strengthening discipline, and confronting escalating threats of banditry, terrorism, and violent crime across Nigeria.
The appointment followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, with Tinubu urging Disu to lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism, and prioritize the protection of lives and property as the foremost responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu described his elevation as humbling, unexpected, and deeply emotional, expressing gratitude for the President’s confidence and acknowledging the weight of the responsibility.
Tinubu praised Disu as a straightforward, committed, and respected officer, citing his professional track record as evidence of his readiness to lead.
Notably, Disu’s appointment came just 48 days before his scheduled retirement at age 60 on April 13, 2026.
However, provisions in the amended Police Act allow Inspectors-General to complete a statutory four-year tenure regardless of retirement age, ensuring continuity in leadership.
The appointment signals both recognition of Disu’s service and a strategic decision to sustain reforms within the police hierarchy.
Outlining his vision, Disu declared that “the era of impunity is over,” pledging to eliminate corruption, human rights violations, and misconduct within the force.
He emphasized stricter supervision, enhanced training, and zero tolerance for abuse of power, stating that professionalism and adherence to the rule of law would define his leadership.
Disu also stressed the importance of rebuilding public confidence, noting that effective policing depends on mutual trust between officers and citizens, whom he described as the police’s “real bosses.”
He further pledged to improve officers’ welfare, believing that better morale and institutional support are essential to confronting Nigeria’s deepening security challenges.
During the handover, Egbetokun expressed gratitude to Tinubu for decades of trust and mentorship, while endorsing Disu as a capable successor who contributed significantly to intelligence coordination, inter-agency collaboration, and crime-fighting operations.
However, his tenure was marred by allegations of corruption, human rights abuses, and controversial policing tactics, leading to reputational damage and his blacklisting by the International Press Institute Nigeria.
Disu’s firm stance against impunity, alongside his focus on accountability, public cooperation, and institutional reform, signals an effort to restore credibility and usher in a new era of transparency and service within the Nigeria Police Force.
