Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho reportedly intervened to prevent the arrest of Isese advocate Tani Olohun in Ibadan. The incident occurred amid an ongoing criminal case against Tani Olohun for allegedly mocking an Islamic prayer in a social media video. Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho,reportedly intervened in Ibadan on Tuesday to prevent police officers from arresting Isese advocate Abdulazeez Adegbola, also known as Tani Olohun.
The reported incident occurred at Tani Olohun’s residence, where officers had arrived amid an ongoing criminal case filed against him by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation. Sources told SaharaReporters that Tani Olohun’s family contacted Igboho, who arrived with supporters and allegedly resisted the attempted arrest.
Accounts of the incident differ over when Igboho arrived and what happened before his intervention, with one source saying he arrived immediately after the arrest attempt and another claiming Tani Olohun had already confronted the officers physically.
A live Facebook video from Tani Olohun’s relatives showed men dressed in civilian clothing and carrying firearms identifying themselves as police officers, while relatives questioned their legitimacy and alleged they were acting like kidnappers. It remains unclear whether the officers had a valid warrant or were acting on a new court order, although one source claimed Igboho told them they could not arrest Tani Olohun despite a reported warrant.
Religious Tension Case Remains Before Court
The attempted arrest is linked to a criminal complaint filed by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation over a social media video that allegedly mocked an Islamic prayer and could incite religious tension.
The case, brought under Sections 114, 210 and 393(1) of the Penal Code Law of Kwara State, is pending before the Upper Area Court II in Ilorin, with the matter adjourned until September 1, 2026. The allegations against Tani Olohun, a prominent advocate for Isese and Yoruba traditional practices, remain unproven in court.
The circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s operation could now raise further legal questions, particularly regarding the reported warrant and the alleged obstruction of police officers.
A source also suggested that Igboho could face legal consequences for allegedly interfering with the arrest, although this claim has not been independently verified. The dispute has placed issues of religious freedom, traditional Yoruba practices and law enforcement conduct at the centre of an increasingly sensitive legal controversy.
