New in: Bondi Beach Terror Attack Death Toll Rises, Heroic Bystander Intervenes

A horrific mass shooting unfolded at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday evening, resulting in at least 12 deaths, including one of the alleged shooters, and leaving 29 people injured. The incident, which occurred during a Hanukkah celebration at Archer Park, a grassed area just north of Bondi Pavilion, has been officially declared a terrorist attack by New South Wales (NSW) police.
The attack began around 6:47 PM local time, with witnesses reporting gunshots and people fleeing in panic. Two alleged gunmen, armed with rifles, reportedly stepped out of a vehicle on Campbell Parade and opened fire on a crowded group of families. One gunman was shot dead at the scene, while a second alleged shooter was arrested in critical condition. Police are actively investigating the possibility of a third attacker and have located several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a vehicle linked to the shooters, which have since been safely contained and removed.
NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that the attack was deliberately designed to target Sydney's Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah, transforming a day of joy into a scene of unspeakable tragedy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident as "an act of evil antisemitism" and a "dark moment for our nation," emphasizing that an attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on all Australians. Leaders across Australia, including Opposition leader Sussan Ley and various community representatives, expressed deep mourning and a strong stance against hate and violence, with calls for national unity.
Amidst the chaos, acts of extraordinary courage emerged. Footage showed a bystander, later identified as 43-year-old fruit shop owner Ahmed, tackling one of the gunmen and wrestling a shotgun from his hands, potentially saving many lives. Tragically, another hero, Reuven Morrison, an assistant at Bondi's Wellington Street synagogue, died while attempting to disarm a shooter and help others to safety. Two police officers were among the injured transported to various hospitals, which also included at least one child. It was revealed that one of the shooters was known to authorities, though "not in an immediate threat perspective," prompting further investigation by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).
The devastating event has sent shockwaves internationally, with the Jewish community in Manchester, still grappling with a prior synagogue attack, expressing their devastation and highlighting growing fears of antisemitic violence. Police across other major cities, including London, have increased visibility in Jewish communities ahead of Hanukkah events. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to share it, and Bondi Beach remains a secured exclusion zone as police ensure no further threats exist.
