Netflix Shocker! Unseen Gem Smashes 500 Million View Record in 2025

"KPop Demon Hunters," an animated musical fantasy directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, has achieved remarkable success since its release on Netflix in June. Six months after its debut, the film has broken a new viewership milestone, reaching an astounding 500 million views on the streaming platform. This achievement positions it halfway to the 1 billion views mark, a feat previously held only by major Netflix series such as "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game."
The movie's popularity is underscored by its consistent presence on Netflix's Top 10 charts for 27 consecutive weeks, making it one of the platform's most-watched films of all time. Beyond its streaming success, "KPop Demon Hunters" also generated $25 million during a limited theatrical release. Critically acclaimed, it boasts a Certified Fresh critics' score of 95% and a Verified Hot audience score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating widespread appeal.
The accompanying soundtrack has also been a massive hit. It secured the second spot on Spotify's Top 10 Albums Globally, with the track "Golden" becoming a standout, accumulating 1.2 billion streams and ranking #7 on Spotify's Top 10 Songs Globally during the year's Wrapped campaign. The film's critical reception has translated into numerous accolades, including nominations for "Best Motion Picture" and "Best Original Song" at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, and five Grammy Nominations, including "Song of the Year." It has also been shortlisted for "Best Original Song" at the 98th Academy Awards.
"KPop Demon Hunters" follows the story of Huntr/x, a female K-pop group who secretly operate as demon hunters. The group, consisting of Mira (May Hong), the main dancer; Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), the main rapper; and Rumi (Arden Cho), the lead vocalist, uses their singing voices to create a magical barrier known as Honmoon. Rumi, however, harbors a secret: she is a half-demon who believes the Honmoon can remove her demon marks. Their nemesis, Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun), tired of being thwarted, agrees to Jinu's (Ahn Hyo-seop) plan to form a rival demon idol group, intending to leverage fan power to weaken the Honmoon's protective abilities.
Director Maggie Kang has confirmed that the film intentionally left some questions unanswered, promising that a forthcoming sequel will address them. This highly anticipated sequel has already been greenlit and is slated for release in 2029, with plot details yet to be revealed. Written by Hannah McMechan, Chris Appelhans, Maggie Kang, and Danya Jimenez, and produced by Aron Warner, the 96-minute film is categorized under Animation, Fantasy, Action, Comedy, Music, and Family genres.
