Music Icon Elton John Honored with Glenn Gould Prize, All-Star Lineup to Perform

Sir Elton John, the renowned musician and humanitarian, has been named the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize. This significant accolade, established in 1987 by The Glenn Gould Foundation to honor the legacy of legendary Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, recognizes individuals for their exceptional artistic accomplishments and their use of art to make a profound impact on the world. John is only the second laureate from the broadly defined rock world, following the late Leonard Cohen, underscoring the prize's diverse recognition of creative talents.
The Glenn Gould Prize Gala Honouring Elton John, initially announced in March 2025 and rescheduled, is set to take place on May 9 at The Theatre at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto. The event will be hosted by Canadian actor Eric McCormack, known for his role in *Will & Grace*. A stellar lineup of Canadian artists will take the stage to perform John’s songs. Recently added performers include Sarah McLachlan and Noah Parets of the National Ballet. They join an already impressive roster featuring Diana Krall, The Beaches, Ron Sexsmith, Jeremy Dutcher, LOONY, and Ryan Wang.
A highlight of the gala will be the presentation of the Glenn Gould Protégé Prize to mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo. Personally selected by Elton John, D’Angelo is a Juno Award and Leonard Bernstein Award recipient, recognized for her exceptional promise and the vital role of mentorship in the arts. This prize includes a CDN$25,000 cash award, complementing the CDN$100,000 award for the Laureate.
Elton John expressed his awe and honor to receive the award, stating his decades-long admiration for Glenn Gould’s virtuosity. Sarah McLachlan echoed this sentiment, calling it “thrilling to be able to pay tribute to him in this meaningful way” and emphasizing the prize’s significance in Canadian and international arts and culture. The jury chair for the 2025 prize, the Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada, highlighted John’s impact beyond performance: “Elton John has used his enormous talent and his great success to change lives. He’s been courageous in taking on causes, whether AIDS, LGBTQ+ rights, addiction and all sorts of issues that were not popular when he engaged with them.” Brian Levine, CEO of the Glenn Gould Foundation, further emphasized that John embodies the spirit of artistic excellence, innovation, and profound humanity, paralleling Gould’s vision of boundless creativity and using music as a force for good.
The Glenn Gould Prize is awarded biennially to living candidates of any nationality across various disciplines including music, theatre, dance, writing, film, and visual art. Previous recipients include R. Murray Shafer (1987), Yehudi Menuhin (1990), Oscar Peterson (1993), Yo-Yo Ma (1999), Pierre Boulez (2002), Leonard Cohen (2011), Philip Glass (2015), and Gustavo Dudamel (2022).
