Musa Ascends: Senate Confirms, Swears In New Defence Minister, Promising Stronger Security

The U.S. government has announced new visa restrictions targeting Nigerians. These restrictions are linked to accusations of undermining religious freedom and stem from what Washington describes as the targeted persecution of Christians within Nigeria. This move follows an interview where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized radical Islam as a significant and immediate threat globally and to the United States. The announcement of the visa ban came just a day after U.S. lawmakers held a roundtable discussion in Washington D.C., focusing on the violence in Nigeria, a meeting convened under President Donald Trump’s directive. In a related appeal, U.S. lawmakers have been urged to exert pressure on the Nigerian government to abolish Sharia law in its northern states, with experts cautioning that these laws and associated groups are fueling the persecution.

Amidst these international pressures, Nigeria's Senate confirmed the appointment of General Christopher Musa, formerly the Chief of Defence Staff, as the nation's new Minister of Defence. This confirmation followed a rigorous five-hour screening process. During his screening, General Musa articulated a firm stance against negotiating with criminals, emphasizing that such negotiations compromise national security. The screening session reportedly grew tense, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio pushing back against Musa being granted a mere “bow and go” waiver, citing pressure from the United States and stating that “even Donald Trump is on our neck.”

Concurrently, the House of Representatives called upon the federal government to disclose the financiers behind terrorism and banditry across Nigeria, advocating for them to be identified, sanctioned, and prosecuted. On another front, a new viral video features a soldier detailing the notably low salaries of officers in the Nigerian army, with the individual stating that new recruits earn only N104,000 Naira upon joining the military. In Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah has undertaken a significant revamp of the State’s Forest Guard, equipping them with sophisticated weaponry in an effort to enhance security throughout the state.

In the political sphere, a new video has gained traction on social media, showcasing numerous brand new luxury cars. These vehicles are branded under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, ostensibly for mobilization activities ahead of the 2027 elections. Despite various challenges, Nigeria also celebrated a positive development with its first airshow. This event, highlighted in a Good News Report, successfully attracted global aerospace manufacturers, defence officials, aviation investors, and enthusiasts, aiming to elevate Nigeria's standing on the international aviation map.
