Moloney Crowned IBF Super Flyweight King, Targets Undisputed Glory!

In a career-defining moment, Australia's Andrew Moloney secured the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight championship of the world on Saturday in Tokoname, Japan. Outpointing the aggressive Willibaldo Garcia in a tightly contested majority decision (115-113, 114-114, 115-113), Moloney's victory at the Aichi Sky Expo not only marked the biggest win of his boxing journey but also positioned him squarely for a potential undisputed title showdown against the unbeaten superstar Jesse Rodriguez in the competitive 115-pound division.

The 35-year-old fighter, hailing from Kingscliff, had made headlines earlier in the week by revealing he turned down a substantial US$250,000 (AU$350,000) step-aside package from Matchroom Boxing. His steadfast decision to prioritize championship belts over financial incentives was profoundly vindicated over 12 grueling rounds. Moloney displayed exceptional resilience, absorbing Garcia's relentless pressure and overcoming cuts above both eyes, a testament to his determination. He adopted a masterful strategy, countering off the back foot with rapid-fire body shots and occasionally slipping jabs to connect with Garcia's chin, preventing the Mexican from controlling the close-quarters battles he typically thrives on. The early rounds saw Moloney establish a clear lead, winning five of the first six rounds according to all three judges. While Garcia escalated his pressure and found some openings in the latter half, Moloney's aggressive and efficient final round, scored 10-9 by judges Nobuto Ikehara, Koji Tanaka, and Saemi Okaniwa, proved decisive in clinching the title.

Upon the announcement of the verdict, an emotional Moloney (29-4, 18 KOs) dropped to his knees, his face covered, before hoisting his new world championship belt and celebrating with his 50-person entourage. Speaking to ESPN in his dressing room, an elated Moloney expressed, "It's been a long, hard road to get this world title, but we finally got it done. This means everything to me. My whole life has been dedicated to being a world champion. I've had to make so many sacrifices... This is a lifetime's worth of work for this moment. To get it done, and to be leaving Japan as the IBF world champion ... it's amazing. It's hard to put it into words." His triumph reversed a frustrating pattern of narrow defeats on boxing's grandest stages.

Moloney's career has been marked by a series of razor-thin margins and controversies. His first world title attempt in June 2020 against Joshua Franco ended in a unanimous decision loss. Six months later, their rematch concluded in a controversial no-contest when a cut above Franco's eye, initially ruled accidental, stopped the fight, leading to a lengthy review by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. In May 2023, his challenge for the WBO super flyweight strap against Japan's Junto Nakatani ended in heartbreak, stopped in the dying seconds of the final round by a brutal punch. More recently, a contentious points defeat to Mexico's Pedro Guevara for the WBC interim title led him to momentarily declare retirement, a decision he quickly reversed. Furthermore, a planned world title eliminator against Argi Cortes failed to materialize due to "unprofessionalism and unreasonable demands" from Cortes's team, ultimately paving the way for his IBF challenge against Garcia.

With the IBF belt now firmly around his waist, Moloney is eager for the ultimate prize: an undisputed fight against the WBO, WBA, and WBC title holder, Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez. "I've proven that I'll fight anyone," Moloney stated, expressing his readiness to prepare "100%" and give "absolutely everything." He also acknowledged the possibility of Masamichi Yabuki moving up in weight, welcoming that challenge as well. However, his next move might involve a mandatory defense against South Africa's Sikho Nqothole, who became the IBF mandatory challenger after his upset win over Charlie Edwards. A rematch with Garcia is also a distinct possibility given the closeness of their contest.

The Tokoname card also featured other significant bouts. Masamichi Yabuki successfully defended his IBF flyweight title against Mexican challenger Rene Calixto by unanimous decision. Filipino fighter John Riel Casimero delivered a brutal fourth-round knockout against Mexico's Luis Nery, who had notably failed to make weight the previous day, though the fight proceeded after he met a 10-pound rehydration clause. Additional results included Michael Angeletti defeating Kenneth Llover, Nurzhigit Dyushebaev over Seiya Meguro, and Aoi Yokoyama triumphing against Vince Paras, all by unanimous decision, with Dyushebaev's win being a fourth-round TKO.
