The situation is linked to the pending details of an expanded R370 Social Relief of Distress grant, with payment dates for all grants confirmed regardless of top-ups.
Millions of ‘core’ social-welfare beneficiaries in South Africa are currently facing uncertainty regarding potential October 2026 SASSA Grant top-ups. This situation is complicated by the fact that the usual date for official confirmation, the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), is scheduled to occur after the upcoming month's disbursement dates. This timing misalignment is not unprecedented, as the National Treasury and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have previously encountered similar challenges concerning the announcement and implementation of grant increases.
Historically, in both 2024 and 2025, several ‘core’ grants received a modest R10 top-up in October, providing some additional financial support to recipients. However, the current year presents a different scenario. The Treasury's 2026 Budget, which was announced in February, detailed specific increases that took effect from April 1, 2026. Under these adjustments, the Older Person, Disability, and Care Dependency grants each increased to R2,400. War Veterans and individuals aged over 75 years saw their grants rise to R2,420, and the Child Support grant experienced a R20 increase, bringing it to R580. Since these April adjustments, there has been no official confirmation regarding any further October 2026 top-ups for these primary grants.
Despite the general lack of clarity for core grants, there is one notable exception that provides a glimmer of hope. The Treasury’s Budget Review document explicitly states that the SASSA Foster Care grant is scheduled for a R10 increase in October 2026, raising it from R1,290 to R1,300. While this specific top-up applies only to a limited number of court-appointed childcare beneficiaries, it indicates that the agency is not entirely disinclined to implement some form of grant adjustment before the end of the year.
Civil society groups have suggested that the absence of October 2026 top-ups for core beneficiaries may be linked to the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. During his February Budget briefing, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana indicated that comprehensive details regarding an ‘expanded’ SRD grant would be unveiled during the MTBPS. The existing 'temporary' SRD grant is currently set to continue until March 31, 2027, with expectations that a new phase will commence thereafter. The government has already committed an additional R36.4 billion to support this grant.
