Military Outrage: Teachers Allegedly Assaulted by Soldiers in Takoradi Spark Public Condemnation

The Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) has strongly condemned what it described as the “repressive and barbaric treatment” allegedly inflicted on a headteacher and three other teachers in Takoradi.

According to the association, the alleged assault was carried out by personnel from the 2BN barracks at Apremdo-Takoradi on April 30, 2026. COHBS said the incident reflects a disturbing pattern of attacks against educators, with many perpetrators rarely facing justice.

In its May 7 statement, the association stressed that teachers continue to work under difficult conditions in underserved communities where many professionals are unwilling to serve. It argued that intimidation, violence, and disrespect toward educators should never be tolerated.

COHBS is now demanding a full investigation into the matter and wants all persons implicated in the alleged assault prosecuted according to the law. The group is also seeking compensation for the affected teachers over the trauma and humiliation they reportedly suffered.

The statement, signed by General Secretary Justice Adu-Darkoh, warned that failure to secure accountability could trigger industrial action. COHBS also called on the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other unions to support the affected teachers, including possible withdrawal of services if necessary.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity, safety, and welfare of teachers across Ghana.
