Breez Sparks Innovation: New Bitcoin Wallet App & Open-Source 'Glow' for Stablecoins Take Center Stage!

Breez, in partnership with Bitcoin Spark, has launched the Glow app, designed to cater to both everyday users and developers by simplifying Bitcoin and Lightning Network interactions. This innovative application allows users to send stablecoins directly from their Bitcoin balance and empowers developers to build enhanced user experiences without the complexities typically associated with Bitcoin development. Breez’s SDK facilitates asset exchange in the background and supports Lightning payments through its Spark integration, aiming to make Bitcoin accessible to everyone.

Glow revolutionizes the Bitcoin wallet experience by replacing traditional seed phrase backups with the Passkey standard, a modern authentication method encouraged by leading tech companies. Despite this change, Glow ensures self-custody and cryptographic control over user funds, all within an auditable, MIT-licensed, free, and open-source progressive web app (PWA). This open-source nature allows developers to inspect, modify, and implement features using the Breez API and SDK, fostering innovation and customizability.

Beyond Passkey login, Glow offers full support for native Lightning payments, enabling users to send and receive funds using customizable Lightning addresses that resemble email addresses (e.g., [email protected]). Initially deployed to a Bitcoiner user base, Glow currently supports sending USDT and USDC across various networks and blockchains through its partnership with Flashnet, drawing value from the user’s Bitcoin balance. The app also integrates with Cash App and MoonPay as onramps, allowing instant Bitcoin onboarding with sats arriving in seconds. For user convenience, Glow includes contacts integration, enabling users to save friends' lightning addresses, thereby streamlining payments and providing a more familiar app experience. Users can also mitigate Bitcoin's volatility by converting their BTC holdings to USD value at will, reportedly earning sats in the process.

A notable feature is the integration of USDB, a Bitcoin-native stablecoin issued by Brale Inc. USDB is licensed as an MSB across over 45 states and claims compliance with GENIUS Act standards, being 100% backed by T-bills, cash, and cash equivalents. Deployed through the Spark protocol and compatible with the Lightning Network, USDB effectively unlocks stablecoin functionality across Bitcoin rails. USDB holders can earn up to 6% APY from Flashnet DEFI exchange profits, according to a Spark announcement. Breez believes this combination of partnerships and technologies signifies that “Bitcoin has finally crossed a threshold,” making advanced UX readily available to developers via the SDK, a capability unprecedented in traditional finance.

For developers, Glow serves as an open-source blueprint, demonstrating how easily Bitcoin features can be implemented using Breez’s SDK and API. Developers can examine Glow’s codebase to understand how features like passkey login, Lightning addresses, or stablecoin transfers function, allowing them to integrate these functionalities into their own applications with minimal effort, rather than building from scratch. Breez emphasizes that developers using the SDK do not take custody of user funds, thereby minimizing regulatory complexities and allowing teams to focus on product development. This release follows Breez's recent collaboration with Turnkey, which enables developers to add non-custodial Bitcoin to apps running wallets from their own servers, solving a critical custody problem that has hindered many large consumer platforms from integrating Bitcoin. With this solution, keys remain inaccessible to app servers, Breez, and Turnkey, ensuring that authority to move funds rests solely with the user, positioning major consumer apps to adopt non-custodial Bitcoin without extensive backend re-architecture.
