Mastercard's AI Revolution: 'Agentic Payments' Debut in Singapore with DBS and UOB

Mastercard has successfully completed its first live, authenticated agent-based payment transaction in Singapore, marking a significant step in advancing autonomous AI commerce from a proof of concept to practical, everyday use. This milestone was announced on March 4, 2026, and was achieved through a strategic partnership with two of Southeast Asia's leading financial institutions, DBS and UOB.
The demonstration involved an AI agent autonomously booking a ride to Singapore's Changi Airport via hoppa, a global mobility provider. The booking process was facilitated by CardInfoLink's AI agent, which seamlessly connects to hoppa's extensive network of taxi and airport limousine services. The secure foundation for this transaction was Mastercard Agent Pay, a robust framework designed by Mastercard for secure, AI-initiated purchases. Each transaction executed under the Agent Pay framework utilizes a unique Mastercard Agentic Token, which is issued on a per-agent basis. Crucially, consumer consent is explicitly captured, and purchase confirmations are secured through Mastercard Payment Passkeys, ensuring a high level of consumer verification and data protection through tokenized credentials authenticated with these passkeys.
This innovative setup showcases an entire agentic payments chain: an AI agent is capable of perceiving a need, selecting an appropriate service, initiating a financial transaction, and completing it without any human intervention or manual confirmation. Minsook Cho, Mastercard's Country Manager for Singapore, emphasized the responsible and secure integration of this innovation into daily services, highlighting Agent Pay's potential.
Singapore holds particular importance in Mastercard's 'agentic rodeo' within the Asia Pacific region, even though the company has conducted similar authenticated transactions in Australia, New Zealand, and India. Mastercard is actively establishing a regional AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore and is deploying dedicated agentic commerce teams across APAC. These teams will support financial institutions and merchants as they transition to agent-led experiences, fostering a new era of commerce. The competitive landscape in Singapore is evident, with DBS having completed a separate agentic payments pilot with Visa in February 2026, where AI agents executed food and beverage transactions using DBS and POSB cards. The fact that DBS participated in both Mastercard's and Visa's agentic milestones within weeks underscores the aggressive positioning of Singapore's financial institutions in this evolving space.
Mastercard has expressed its intention to expand Agent Pay use cases into various sectors, including transportation, travel, and retail. These sectors often involve multiple manual payment steps, making them ideal candidates for the friction-reducing benefits of agentic payments. The successful ride to Changi Airport serves as a foundational step in building the infrastructure for AI agents to conduct payments on behalf of consumers, signaling a future where autonomous commerce is increasingly common.
