Massive Jeep Recall: Nearly Half Million Grand Cherokees Face Airbag Module Defect!

The role of airbags as a critical, life-saving safety feature in modern vehicles, including trucks and SUVs, is undeniable. Since their introduction in the 1970s, airbags have significantly contributed to preventing serious head and bodily injuries during automotive crashes, evolving to protect nearly every part of the cabin. However, their effectiveness is entirely dependent on the flawless operation of sensors and modules that detect impacts and trigger proper inflation. A significant safety recall has been issued for specific Jeep Grand Cherokee models due to a critical software defect that could compromise this vital safety mechanism, potentially leaving occupants at risk.
This recall affects a substantial number of vehicles: 419,035 units of the 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2023–2025 Grand Cherokee L SUVs. The crux of the problem lies within the software of the occupant restraint controller (ORC) module. This essential module is responsible for managing sensor-fault issues related to the side-impact airbags. According to the recall, the ORC module's software may fail to clear these fault codes, even after the underlying physical issue, such as a faulty sensor, has been repaired or replaced. This means the ORC module can continue to retain the fault history and treat it as if the problem is still present, potentially affecting the airbags' deployment capability. A large portion of the recalled vehicles, specifically 278,905 units, are the three-row Grand Cherokee L models.
Jeep's parent company, Stellantis, became aware of this software anomaly through warranty claims that began to surface in early 2023. The automaker undertook a rigorous and extensive investigation that spanned more than three years, meticulously working to identify the root cause. During this period, Stellantis systematically ruled out other potential issues, including problems with door wire-harness routing and the sensors themselves. By April of the current year, Stellantis definitively determined that this ORC module software issue could lead to affected vehicles being out of compliance with federal airbag safety regulations. Consequently, the decision was made to initiate a recall for the implicated Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L model years. Importantly, the company has stated that no other vehicles built on the same platform, nor any vehicles produced after the 2026 model year, utilize this specific ORC module.
Fortunately, a solution to this critical safety concern is available, and it does not require the replacement of the entire ORC module. Owners of the affected Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles will need to bring their SUVs to an authorized dealership. At the dealership, the ORC module will undergo a software reprogramming procedure, which is expected to permanently resolve the issue of fault codes not clearing. Dealers were notified of the recall and provided with the reprogramming instructions by the end of May, ensuring they are prepared to address the problem. Owners, however, are anticipated to receive official notification of the recall around mid-June. To determine if their specific vehicle is included in this recall, owners can check by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website or on the Mopar recall website.
