During a recent interview with Collider’s Christina Radish, Mike Colter shed light on his thoughts about returning to the role while discussing his new CBS law drama, Cupertino. When asked if Luke Cage was a character he had always hoped to return to, Colter admitted, "Yeah, it was in the back of my mind somewhere. It wasn’t in the forefront. I wasn’t actively campaigning or worrying about trying to revisit it because actors get into the business wanting to play different characters." He further elaborated on his perspective, stating, "I'm not really obsessed with one particular character over the other. It’s nice to have the opportunity to play characters and move around and come back, but it was in the back of my mind."

Colter also revealed that he had an inkling of a chance once he knew about Charlie Cox's active efforts to bring back Daredevil. "I knew Charlie [Cox] was actively campaigning, so when he got the show picked back up, I thought, ‘Well, there’s a chance,’" he remarked. Throughout the years, Colter has consistently emphasized that his primary motivation for revisiting a character like Luke Cage is to bring joy to the fans. This sentiment remains strong even after his return has been officially confirmed.

He explained his reasoning: "It wasn’t at the forefront of my mind, but I really enjoyed playing the character. I probably enjoy it as much for the fans than anything. I think the diehard Luke Cage fans and Marvel fans enjoy these characters, so it’s bringing a bit of joy to their lives. That’s where I am on it right now. I love doing it for the people." Colter passionately likened the return of Luke Cage and The Defenders to a legendary band reunion, referencing groups like Led Zeppelin or ABBA. He recounted meeting famous frontmen and understanding that dedicated fans will always wait, no matter how long, to see that "greatness" return. This enduring desire from the fanbase, he believes, is what makes these comebacks so significant.
