London Synagogue Engulfed: Counter-Terror Police Probe 'Arson Attack' on Historic Site

Counter-terrorism officers are leading an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a former synagogue in Nelson Street, Whitechapel, east London. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, is part of a growing series of apparent attacks on Jewish sites across the capital, prompting significant concern and a robust response from authorities and political figures.
The Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade were alerted just before 5:15 am to a blaze at the historic building. Officers found minor damage to gates and a lock at the front of the property. CCTV footage confirmed that the fire was started deliberately around 5:10 am, leading to the incident being treated as arson. No arrests have been made in connection with this specific event. Det Chief Supt Brittany Clarke stated that the incident is being taken "extremely seriously," with close collaboration from Counter Terrorism Policing. She acknowledged that while the building has not functioned as a synagogue for some years, the attack would cause "little comfort to the Jewish community in Tower Hamlets, Hackney and beyond."
The building, founded as a synagogue in 1923, closed in 2020 and was put up for sale earlier this year. A local Muslim group, the Ashaadibi Education & Cultural Centre, had placed a significant deposit with plans to purchase the £2 million site and convert it into a mosque, community, and education centre. Leon Silver, 76, president of the former synagogue, described his shock upon hearing the news, noting that the fire targeted the gates and an attempt was made to break a window, but "luckily it didn’t spread to the inner door." He lamented the filtering of Middle Eastern conflicts into local incidents, expressing that he was used to hearing about such events in areas like Golders Green, not Whitechapel.
This incident follows a troubling series of arsons and attempted arsons targeting Jewish Londoners, particularly in the north-west of the city, and the recent double stabbing in Golders Green, which is being treated as an act of terrorism. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter-Terrorism Policing London, confirmed that investigators are considering potential links between these incidents and urged anyone with CCTV or information to contact the police. She highlighted that counter-terrorism officers are providing protective security advice to various Jewish organisations and community venues, and with the national terrorism threat level raised to "severe," public vigilance is crucial.
The suspected arson has been described by the Prime Minister's official spokesman as "the latest in a series of deeply shocking and disturbing incidents targeting the Jewish community." The Prime Minister warned Iran that any efforts to stir up violence and hatred in the UK would "not be tolerated," especially amid suspicions that Tehran could be backing antisemitic attacks, possibly through a group called Hayi. He stated that "these actions will have consequences if that proves to be the case" and announced that the government is fast-tracking legislation to tackle "malign threats" and allow action against state-backed groups, with calls for the proscription of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In response to the escalating crisis, Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party, hosted a summit on antisemitism with senior public figures, community group leaders, government ministers, and police chiefs. He emphasized a "zero tolerance" approach to antisemitism and outlined new measures. Universities will now be expected to publish the scale of antisemitic incidents on their campuses and the specific steps taken to address them, with "zero tolerance for inaction." The Arts Council will be expected to withdraw and claw back funding from entities found to promote antisemitism. Additionally, an independent audit of how antisemitism allegations are handled across various sectors has been ordered to address "complacency, delays or weak enforcement." The government also announced an extra £1 million in funding for Jewish communities across England to support safety work and counter antisemitic narratives, alongside existing commitments of £7 million for schools, colleges, and universities, and a focus on Holocaust education.
Community leaders have expressed both appreciation and urgency. Louis Danker, president of the Union of Jewish Students, underscored that "Britain has an anti-Semitism crisis," with many young Jews despairing for their future, citing a report that one in five students are reluctant to share a house with a Jew. The Board of Deputies of British Jews viewed the roundtable as an "important moment to demonstrate a change in approach" but stressed the need for "more urgent action," including adequately resourcing police, proscribing the IRGC, ending "incitement at pro-Palestine protests," and accelerating the criminal justice system for those inciting hatred. The Campaign Against Antisemitism echoed these sentiments, noting that while some of their language had been adopted, many announcements were merely directing authorities to do what they should have been doing for years, calling for immediate bans on organizations like the IRGC.
