INEC Stirs 2027 Race: Key Presidential Candidates' Credentials Unveiled

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fulfilled its statutory obligation by publishing the personal particulars and credentials of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 general election. This exercise, which commenced on Saturday, is in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, which mandates INEC to display candidates' personal particulars within 21 days of receiving them. This provision enables members of the public to scrutinize the submitted documents and, if necessary, challenge any information deemed false through the appropriate legal channels.

Among the prominent figures whose details were published are President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The electoral umpire also displayed the particulars of vice-presidential candidates, including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, running mate to Obi, and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reacted to the publication with a sense of vindication, stating that it had effectively ended "misinformation and propaganda" suggesting the party would neither field candidates nor be recognized by INEC. The party proudly highlighted the publication of their presidential candidate, Distinguished Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, who will represent the party in the 2027 presidential election. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP reiterated its commitment to genuine reconciliation, inclusiveness, and internal cohesion, extending an "open hand" to aggrieved members and welcoming returning and new defectors. The party affirmed its resolve to rebuild structures and present quality leadership under the guidance of National Chairman Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

However, the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the PDP, led by Dr. Tanimu Turaki, and its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, indicated they were not concerned by INEC's decision. They stated their ongoing court cases would continue, expressing certainty that "at the appropriate time, victory will be ours" and that they were awaiting the outcome of "favourable judicial pronouncements."

A review of President Bola Tinubu’s EC9 nomination form revealed he listed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, obtained in 1979 "with honours." His academic transcript supported this. While the spaces for primary and secondary school qualifications on the summary page of the form were marked "0000" or left blank, copies of his university and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates were attached as supporting documents. His NYSC discharge certificate indicated service in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983. Tinubu's employment history included working at Mobil Nigeria Limited (1983-1992), serving as Governor of Lagos State (1999-2007), and currently serving the Federal Government of Nigeria (since 2023). His personal details identified his date of birth as March 29, 1952, in Lagos, with "politician" as his occupation.

Vice President Kashim Shettima’s submitted credentials provided more extensive educational details. His Certificate of Primary Education, issued by the Ministry of Education, North-Eastern State, confirmed his attendance at Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978. His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, obtained in June 1983, showed six credits and passes, including a distinction in Religious Knowledge and Economics. He further obtained a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989, followed by a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. His NYSC discharge certificate indicated completion of national service between October 1989 and October 1990.

The publication of these documents is a crucial phase in the electoral timetable for the 2027 general election. Campaigns for the presidential election are scheduled to commence on August 19, leading up to the presidential and National Assembly elections slated for January 16, 2027.
