Lagos Shake-Up: Speaker's Son Takes Helm as Agege LG Chairman Resigns Amid Health Woes

AbdulGaniyu Obasa, son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has been officially confirmed as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. This significant political transition follows the resignation of his predecessor, Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco, who stepped down from office citing persistent health challenges that affected his ability to effectively discharge his duties.
Mr. Azeez's resignation was formally announced and accepted by the council's Legislative Arm during a plenary session. Lawmakers received and read a letter from Azeez detailing his health reasons, and unanimously accepted his decision with immediate effect. They commended his choice to prioritize personal well-being over holding onto power, highlighting the importance of personal health in leadership and maintaining the integrity of governance. This decision, they noted, was a testament to his service to the community and a reminder for leaders to consider personal well-being.
AbdulGaniyu Obasa, who previously served as Vice Chairman, had already been acting in Azeez's place since July 2025. Azeez had gone on medical leave barely a month after being sworn in, transferring power to his deputy. Following the acceptance of Azeez's resignation, the Legislative Arm unanimously approved Obasa as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. Lawmakers noted that Obasa’s appointment reflects the council’s commitment to seamless leadership transition, stability, and continued service delivery to residents. Notably, Obasa had initially expressed interest in contesting the council chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but was dropped due to opposition, leading to Azeez's nomination as chairman and Obasa emerging as the vice-chairmanship candidate.
The official takeover by Obasa has, however, drawn mixed reactions across political circles. The opposition, particularly the African Action Congress (AAC), described the transition as a “carefully scripted succession” and alleged it was part of a pre-arranged political plan. Ayo Oni, former Lagos State chairman of the AAC, stated that
