Lagos Catastrophe: Building Collapse Traps Residents, Five Rescued

A two-storey building located at 4 Modupeola Street, Mangoro Bus Stop, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, partially collapsed on Wednesday, September 24, leading to injuries and the rescue of six individuals. The incident, which occurred late Wednesday evening and saw rescue operations extending into the early hours, involved a structure that was originally a bungalow undergoing conversion into a two-storey building, with residents reportedly still occupying the ground floor at the time of the collapse.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the distress call, with operatives from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other first responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (from Ikeja and Agege stations), mobilizing to the scene. Local residents also joined the efforts to dig through the rubble and assist those trapped.

One person, identified as a 44-year-old man, was trapped beneath the debris. He was eventually pulled out with fractures and bruises. Officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) conveyed him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Surgical Emergency unit, where he was admitted in stable condition for further treatment. Additionally, five other adult male construction workers were rescued from the collapsed rear section of the building. These five victims were transported to a nearby private hospital in the neighborhood for medical attention, with officials confirming they are receiving treatment.

Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, confirmed the timely response of LASEMA and other first responders in rescuing the trapped victim and five others. Margaret Adeseye, Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, also corroborated the incident, stating her team received a distress call at 5:39 a.m. and arrived at 6:24 a.m., confirming that five adult male construction workers were rescued with varying degrees of injuries and no fatalities were recorded. The Lagos State Government has since launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, with promises that necessary steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
