Kobe's Legendary Jordans Command Half-Million at Auction

A remarkable piece of NBA history recently went up for auction, with a player-exclusive pair of Air Jordan IIIs, worn and signed by basketball legend Kobe Bryant during the 2002-03 NBA season, fetching an impressive $500,000. The sale was facilitated by Pharrell Williams' auction house, Joopiter, highlighting the enduring value of memorabilia from one of the sport's all-time greats.
Bryant's early career was closely associated with Adidas, but in a significant move in 2002, he ended his contract early by paying the company $8 million. This decision ushered in a unique period for Bryant, who, despite reportedly turning down a $15 million per season offer from Reebok, opted to spend the subsequent 2002-03 season wearing various brands as a 'sneaker free agent'. It was during this transitional year that he donned the now-iconic Air Jordan IIIs.
The specific pair of Jordans, size 14, were crafted in the distinctive white, purple, and gold colorway of the Los Angeles Lakers. Their authenticity and historical significance were meticulously confirmed through photo-matching by MeiGray, linking them to two pivotal games. The first was on February 14, 2003, against the San Antonio Spurs, and the second, just four days later, on February 18, 2003, against the Houston Rockets.
Adding to their legendary status, these shoes were worn during a phenomenal nine-game streak where Bryant scored at least 40 points in each contest, running from February 6 through February 23. This extraordinary achievement places Bryant in an elite club, as only he, Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain (who accomplished it three times) have achieved such a prolonged scoring run of 40-plus points.
In the photo-matched game against the Spurs on February 14, Bryant delivered a stellar performance, scoring 44 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out four assists, securing four steals, and blocking two shots. Four days later, in a double-overtime victory against the Rockets, he further elevated his game, tallying 52 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks, famously executing a memorable dunk over then-rookie sensation Yao Ming.
Following this eventful season, and a month after the Lakers were defeated by the eventual champion Spurs in the Western Conference finals, Bryant formalized his next endorsement chapter by signing a lucrative five-year deal with Nike, valued at $40 million.
