Hybrid Muscle Unleashed: 2027 Corvette Grand Sport X Electrifies the Road!

The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport X marks a significant evolution in the iconic sports car lineage, introducing a hybrid and all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as a successor to the E-Ray. Evaluated first at Atlanta Motorsports Park and later in real-world conditions, including a striking Torch Red convertible at a testing facility, this new iteration is touted for its blistering speed and surprising daily usability, bridging the gap between a pure track machine and a comfortable cruiser.

Chevrolet’s team has affectionately nicknamed the Grand Sport X the “Baby ZR1X,” a testament to its formidable performance, though it's important to distinguish it from the supercharged, 1,250 hp, and Cup 2 R-shod ZR1X hypercar. Despite the comparison, the Grand Sport X demonstrates remarkable acceleration, achieving 0-60 mph in a mere 2.4 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the previous E-Ray. Its quarter-mile time stands at an impressive 10.4 seconds at 129.2 mph, faster than the E-Ray’s 10.6 seconds at 128.0 mph, showcasing enhanced consistency and precision from its improved launch control system.

Powering the Grand Sport X is a sophisticated hybrid powertrain. It features the Corvette's new LS6 6.7-liter V-8 engine, which independently produces 535 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. This is augmented by an electric motor contributing an additional 186 hp, culminating in a potent total system output of 721 hp – a substantial 66 hp increase over the E-Ray’s 655 hp. The power is managed by a Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which benefits from a new final drive ratio of 5.56:1, specifically tuned to optimize off-the-line acceleration.

Beyond its robust powertrain, the 2027 Grand Sport X boasts a refined chassis engineered for dynamic handling. It is equipped with specially tuned MagneRide dampers and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, contributing to its composed ride and agile performance. The car comes shod with high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, differentiating it from the ultra-sticky Cup 2 R tires standard on the ZR1X. While its figure-eight test track time of 23.0 seconds with an average 0.93 g and a skidpad lateral-g average of 1.06 were slightly less dynamic than the E-Ray’s 22.5 seconds at 0.95 g and 1.10 g, it remains an exceptionally capable performer.

Braking performance is handled by standard carbon-ceramic brakes. Despite a relatively soft pedal feel for a performance vehicle, stopping distances are solid, with the Grand Sport X halting from 60–0 mph in 103 feet, identical to the E-Ray. While some compromises exist, such as the front electric drive potentially numbing the steering, a sometimes jerky powertrain at startup, and marginal efficiency gains from the hybrid system, the Grand Sport X ultimately delivers a compelling package of blistering acceleration, fantastic engine sound, and remarkable usability, making it a true daily-drivable hybrid dynamite.
