Kingstown's Future Unleashed: Co-Creator Teases Seasons 5 & 6 with an 'End Goal'!

In a detailed discussion surrounding the intense fourth season of Paramount+'s 'Mayor of Kingstown', co-creator Hugh Dillon and star Laura Benanti offered insights into the show's escalating violence, profound character transformations, and the long-envisioned endgame for the series. Collider's Steve Weintraub engaged with Dillon and Benanti, exploring how the season's climactic events, particularly the explosive shootout, have reshaped characters and set the stage for future installments.
Hugh Dillon revealed that the concept for 'Mayor of Kingstown' originated 15 years ago when he partnered with Taylor Sheridan, drawing inspiration from Dillon's real-life experiences in Kingston, Ontario. From the outset, they established a definitive 'end goal' for the series, a destination they have not yet reached, despite four successful seasons. This long-term vision underscores the deliberate narrative arc guiding the McLusky family's ongoing struggles to maintain peace in Kingstown, Michigan.
Season 4 proved to be relentless and brutal, focusing on Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) being surrounded by adversaries, with his primary concern being the safety of his brother, Kyle (Taylor Handley). This season culminated in a cathartic Episode 10, 'Belly of the Beast', leaving audiences to ponder the McLusky brothers' future. Dillon described his immersion in the show's world, emphasizing his fascination with the 'musicality of the violence' and the social construct of people's attempts to control their darkest impulses.
Laura Benanti, a newcomer to the series as Cindy Stephens, recounted her character's 'wild arc'. Cindy, a single mother seeking a better life for her children, experiences an incredibly challenging first day on the job, witnessing and enduring 'very real and scary' events, including the season finale shootout. Despite the horrors, Cindy's resilience prevents her from quitting, leading her to undertake tasks beyond her official duties because she believes it's the right thing to do. Her interactions with Mike McLusky's character propel her through a significant transformation from her initial introduction to her changed state at season's end, profoundly altering her perspective for Season 5.
The finale of Season 4, featuring the death of Merle and the escape of the Colombian kid, sparked discussions about Season 5. Dillon confirmed that work on Season 5 is actively underway, having already envisioned the explosive shootout scene for the fourth season's conclusion immediately after Season 3 wrapped. His deep obsession with the show, its characters, and every component extends to conceptualizing seasons 5 and 6, all aligned with the ultimate ending Taylor Sheridan and he mapped out years ago. Benanti described filming the prison shootout as 'very real to shoot' and 'pretty scary, and also awesome', highlighting the intensity of the production. Dillon also touched upon Mike McLusky's character, suggesting he regrets certain actions but is primarily driven by the need to survive.
