Kano Political Firestorm: Deputy Governor's Resignation Demand Ignites Controversy

The Kano State Government is embroiled in a political disagreement following a reported call for the resignation of Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo. This controversial suggestion, made by the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has ignited strong criticism from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which deemed the move as unnecessary and unacceptable.
The catalyst for this call is the significant political realignment within the state government. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), taking with him a majority of his cabinet members, 22 members of the State House of Assembly, and nine members of the House of Representatives. However, Deputy Governor Gwarzo has chosen to remain with the NNPP, creating a situation of political divergence at the top level of the state’s executive arm.
Speaking during a radio programme, Commissioner Waiya argued that the governor and his deputy were elected on a joint ticket and should therefore maintain political alignment in the interest of unity and effective governance. He suggested that remaining in a different political party could undermine trust and coordination within the administration, insisting that loyalty to the governor’s political direction was essential.
The remarks immediately drew backlash from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which described the call for Gwarzo’s resignation as “unwarranted and politically motivated.” Supporters of the movement argued that the deputy governor’s decision to remain with the NNPP reflects his commitment to the mandate given by voters and should not be interpreted as disloyalty or insubordination.
Political analysts note that the development exposes deepening cracks within Kano’s political structure, particularly between loyalists of Governor Yusuf and supporters of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement. They warn that escalating tensions could disrupt governance if not carefully managed.
As of the time of filing this report, Deputy Governor Gwarzo has not issued an official response to the call for his resignation. Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has yet to announce any formal steps regarding the matter, leaving the situation unresolved and subject to further political negotiations.
