Kano Governor Yusuf's Political Earthquake: NNPP Laments as APC Prepares Red Carpet

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been at the center of a significant political development, with reports emerging of his resignation from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and a potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move has sparked strong reactions from various political figures and party chapters, highlighting the intricate dynamics of Nigerian politics.
The NNPP, through its National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, unequivocally condemned Governor Yusuf's departure, labeling it a betrayal. The party refuted the Governor's claim of an 'irredeemable crisis' within the NNPP, pointing to recent, successfully held congresses from the ward level up to the national convention on December 20, 2025, all of which were supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and attended by the Governor. Furthermore, the NNPP reminded Governor Yusuf of the party's victories in two supplementary elections for Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa constituencies in August 2025, underscoring its stability and electoral strength. The party expressed profound disappointment, accusing Governor Abba of breaking the trust placed in him by the people of Kano State and the Kwankwasiyya Movement after years of loyal service. The NNPP warned against the consequences of such political defection, drawing parallels to Alhaji Abubakar Rimi's move from the People's Redemption Party (PRP) to the Nigerian People's Party (NPP) in the early 1980s, which led to significant electoral defeat for Rimi and most of the defecting officials. The party urged its 1,019,602 voters and the wider populace to remain calm, patient, and restrained, stating that 'History has always shown that people who swap loyalty for convenience and honesty for trickery seldom avoid being judged by the public.'
However, a crucial clarification was offered by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, founder, leader, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NNPP. Aniebonam asserted that Governor Yusuf did not, in fact, resign from the New Nigeria Peoples Party itself, but rather from the Kwankwasiya Movement, which is led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He explained that the Governor's resignation letter was not addressed to the authentic National Working Committee (NWC) of the NNPP, nor to any recognized state or ward leadership of the party. Instead, it was reportedly sent to a member of the Kwankasiya Movement in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, an entity not recognized by the NNPP NWC as the party chairman. Aniebonam emphasized the legal standing of the NNPP as a registered political party, distinct from the Kwankasiya Movement, which he described as merely a pressure group. He cited court rulings, including from the Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court, which directed INEC to recognize the Aniebonam-led Board of Trustees and restrained INEC from transacting business with the Kwankasiya Movement. Aniebonam also highlighted that elected officials in Kano, including Governor Yusuf, won their seats under the NNPP platform using the 'Basket of Fruits' logo, not the 'Kwankasiya insignia of book and red colour.' He attributed the ongoing crisis in Kano to what he termed 'the high handedness of Kwankwaso' and an administrative lapse on INEC's part in updating its records. Aniebonam reiterated that the NNPP had previously lifted the Governor's suspension and directed him to assume leadership as the party's highest elected officer, urging members to remain committed for the 2027 general elections.
Concurrently, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has openly welcomed the prospect of Governor Abba Yusuf joining its ranks. Abdullahi Abbas, the Chairman of the APC in Kano, stated that the party is always open to new members, emphasizing that 'politics is about strength in numbers.' He expressed that the APC would not reject any politician seeking to join, as defection means 'addition to your number and by extension an increase to our success during the polls.' Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, the APC State Secretary, further affirmed this welcome, expressing optimism that the Governor would formally declare for the ruling party soon, with its doors fully open to him and his supporters. The APC anticipates that Governor Yusuf's move would be accompanied by a large number of elected local government chairmen, councilors, and other political office holders, providing a significant boost to the party. In a symbolic gesture, the APC has already reserved a special electronic registration number, '001,' for Governor Yusuf at his Chiranci-Diso ward, indicating their preparedness to accommodate him, his cabinet members, supporters, and political associates. Abbas dismissed concerns about automatic tickets for defectors as premature, noting that the focus is on winning the 2027 elections. He also clarified that a governor's defection involves careful, duly followed processes, dispelling rumors of delays.
This political saga in Kano, with the governor's reported resignation from the NNPP and the APC's enthusiastic reception, underscores a period of significant realignment within the state's political landscape. The conflicting narratives from different factions of the NNPP further complicate the understanding of Governor Yusuf's political allegiance, even as both major parties gear up for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
