Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates & PSL: South African Football's Transfer Frenzy & League Drama Unfold!

The South African football landscape is experiencing a dynamic period of player movements, coaching changes, and award nominations as clubs prepare for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season. Kaizer Chiefs, in particular, are undergoing a significant squad overhaul, marked by both strategic departures and crucial permanent signings.

Kaizer Chiefs recently confirmed the departure of striker Tashreeq Morris by mutual consent, ending his six-month spell at Naturena. Morris, who joined in January 2025 in a swap deal involving Christian Saile, struggled with injuries and found himself further down the pecking order after the arrivals of Khanyisa Mayo and Etiosa Ighodaro. His solitary goal for Amakhosi came against Sekhukhune United. Morris's exit follows those of Aden McCarthy, who moved to Sabah FK, and George Matlou and Happy Mashiane, whose contracts were not renewed, signifying a clear intent from the club to reshape its roster.

In a major strategic move, Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly secured Khanyisa Mayo on a permanent deal, activating an agreement with CR Belouizdad for approximately R9.8 million. The 27-year-old winger/striker is now set to remain at Naturena until at least June 2028. This move demonstrates a strong show of faith, especially after Mayo endured a frustrating first season plagued by injuries and a struggle to cement a regular starting place, finishing with just two goals across all competitions. The arrival of new head coach Fernando Da Cruz appears to have provided Mayo a fresh opportunity to rediscover the form that saw him become Cape Town City's all-time leading goalscorer with 29 goals in 93 appearances, and later earn a R20 million move to CR Belouizdad in 2024. Mayo's permanent signing marks the club's second confirmed acquisition for the upcoming season, following defender Thabo Moloisane.

The Soweto giants' transfer strategy continues to draw attention, with a growing reliance on free agents becoming a talking point among supporters. Last season, Kaizer Chiefs signed seven free agents as part of their squad rebuild. While some, like Thabiso Monyane and Lebohang Maboe, established themselves as regular starters, others struggled to make a significant impact. With Moloisane already secured on a free transfer, speculation is rife about whether Amakhosi will pursue other high-profile free agents currently available, such as Tshegofatso Mabasa, Percy Tau, and Peter Shalulile. Head coach Fernando Da Cruz, having only just begun pre-season preparations, is expected to evaluate his squad rigorously as the club aims for a strong league campaign, a competitive run in the CAF Confederation Cup, and silverware as minimum targets.

Meanwhile, other prominent clubs are also making headlines. Orlando Pirates' 21-year-old star Relebohile Mofokeng is set for a significant move to Belgian side Union-Saint Gilloise. The transfer, which could see Pirates recoup €4 million (R75 million), promises a substantial salary increase for Mofokeng, with whispers suggesting he could earn R1.7 million monthly, a stark rise from his reported R90,000 at Pirates. Mofokeng was instrumental in Pirates' league charge last term, contributing 10 goals and eight assists, and recently caught attention with an impressive display against South Korea in the World Cup. He is expected to link up with Canadian striker Promise David at his new club.

Sekhukhune United is also experiencing notable changes, having appointed former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze as their new head coach. Kaze, who recently departed Naturena after helping Amakhosi qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup, brings a wealth of experience, including work with the Burundi national team, FC Barcelona Academy in Canada, and a successful stint with Young Africans SC where he guided them to the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2023. Sekhukhune United’s CEO Jonas Malatji expressed confidence in Kaze's expertise in player development and understanding of the South African football landscape. In conjunction with Kaze's arrival, Sekhukhune United confirmed the departure of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, whose contract was not renewed. Leaner, a first-choice keeper for Babina Noko and a recent Bafana Bafana debutant, is now a free agent and is expected to attract interest from several Betway Premiership clubs, with Orlando Pirates potentially being an option to bolster their goalkeeping department.

The PSL has also commenced the unveiling of nominees for the 2025/26 PSL Awards, starting with standout performers in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and the DStv Diski Challenge. For the Motsepe Foundation Championship Young Player of the Season, Gabriel Amato, Emile Witbooi, and Cayden Fortune (all from Cape Town City) have been nominated. In the Goalkeeper of the Season category for the same league, Malcolm Jacobs (Venda FC), Siphamandla Hleza (Milford FC), and Mickey van der Hart (Cape Town City) are the finalists. The DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season nominations include Bennet Mokoena (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Lebo Mohlala (Orlando Pirates). Supporters eagerly await the nominations for the major Betway Premiership awards, including Footballer of the Season and Coach of the Season.

In a separate sporting note from the international scene, the World Cup Round of 32 has already delivered thrilling encounters. Brazil defeated Japan in stoppage time, while Germany succumbed to Paraguay on penalties. Morocco also advanced after a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, setting up a Round of 16 clash with Canada.
