James Cameron Continues Box Office Reign, Crushes Another Marvel Record

After more than 50 days in theaters worldwide, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has concluded its run, slipping out of the domestic top five this past weekend. While the epic threequel did not match the historic box office dominance of its predecessors, it still ranks among the highest-grossing films globally.

The film is projected to close with about $400 million domestically, but is expected to fall short of $1.5 billion worldwide, trailing the original Avatar by roughly $1.5 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water by about $1 billion.

Despite mixed perceptions of its performance, Fire and Ash recorded a modest milestone in its eighth weekend, earning approximately $3.5 million to place seventh on the domestic chart. It was notably outperformed by fellow Disney release Zootopia 2, which has continued to attract audiences despite a longer theatrical run.

Zootopia 2 has surpassed $400 million domestically and $1.7 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025 and second globally, behind China’s Ne Zha 2.

Critically, Avatar: Fire and Ash marked a departure from the franchise’s earlier acclaim. Unlike Zootopia 2, which earned a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination, the Avatar sequel received lukewarm reviews and was largely absent from major awards conversations. It became the first film in the franchise not to secure a Best Picture nomination and is poised to be the first not to cross the $2 billion global threshold.

Still, with a domestic total exceeding $390 million, the film managed to edge past Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 domestically, underscoring its commercial weight even as it fell short of the towering legacy set by its predecessors.
