James Bond Producer Barbara Broccoli Dives into Shakespeare with Star-Studded 'Othello' Adaptation in Doha

Barbara Broccoli's Eon Productions, renowned for its association with the James Bond franchise, is set to co-produce a cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Othello' in collaboration with Qatar's newly established Film Committee. This high-profile project marks Broccoli's inaugural venture since the transfer of Bond rights to Amazon MGM. The film will be directed by and star David Oyelowo in the titular role, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Desdemona and Cynthia Erivo as Emilia, bringing together a formidable cast for this ambitious undertaking. Filming is scheduled to commence in the Qatari capital of Doha in autumn 2026.
The upcoming film draws its inspiration from the critically acclaimed stage production of 'Othello' that debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, under the direction of Sam Gold. Barbara Broccoli expressed her long-standing desire to bring this particular adaptation to the screen, stating her ambition to produce the cinematic version ever since the New York staging. David Oyelowo will reprise his powerful portrayal of Othello, while Rachel Brosnahan returns to the role of Desdemona. Cynthia Erivo joins the cast to play Emilia, enriching the ensemble.
