INEC Shakes Up 2027 Polls: Deadline Extended for Candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant extension for political parties to upload their lists of candidates for the forthcoming governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, scheduled as part of the February 2027 general election. Initially, the deadline for the submission process, as per the revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general election, was set for Saturday, August 8, 2026. However, following numerous appeals from political parties requesting additional time to finalize their submissions, INEC has now moved this crucial deadline to Tuesday, August 11, 2026. This extension aims to provide adequate opportunity for all parties to comply with the electoral requirements.

In a related development concerning immediate electoral processes, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, also addressed issues pertaining to the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the impending August 15 governorship election in Osun State. Haruna disclosed that replacement downloadable PVCs have been made readily available to voters residing in the Odo-Otin and Ife Central Local Government Areas of Osun State. This provision comes as a direct response to unfortunate incidents where hoodlums unlawfully stole PVCs from collection centres in these specific areas.

The commission further specified that the window for voters who had applied for the replacement of lost, damaged, or defaced PVCs to print their downloadable copies would conclude at midnight on Sunday, August 9. This tight deadline is essential for INEC to efficiently compile comprehensive data on all downloaded PVCs. This data is critical for determining the final statistics of total PVCs collected, a vital metric required before the Osun governorship election on August 15. The commission underscored that despite the theft, the illegally acquired PVCs could not be utilized to cast votes in the upcoming election, thereby maintaining the integrity of the voting process.

Reflecting on the PVC collection process in Osun State, INEC recounted that the exercise initially commenced at the Registration Area level from July 22 to July 28. Due to widespread complaints regarding large crowds and significant difficulties encountered by voters at the collection centres, the period was subsequently extended to July 31. Following this initial phase, the collection process transitioned to the local government level, where it ran from August 1 to August 7. These sequential phases were designed to ensure maximum voter participation and accessibility.

Ultimately, INEC reassured the citizens of Osun State regarding its thorough preparations for the August 15 governorship poll. The commission reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles by conducting an election that is free, fair, credible, and inclusive for all eligible voters.
