The 2028 Bentley Torcal, marking Bentley's debut in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, represents a bold fusion of cutting-edge technology and the marque's long-standing tradition of old-world craftsmanship. Touted as a vehicle that uses crystals and drumbeats to engage the senses, it aims to usher in a new era for Bentley while honoring its 107 years of history, with a meticulous attention to detail and human-centric design.
Bentley's strategic decision to electrify an SUV first is rooted in the success of the Bentayga, which accounts for 45 percent of the brand's sales. However, the Torcal is not merely an electric Bentayga; it distinguishes itself by being both lower and shorter than its predecessor. Its design language is forward-looking, with the influence of the EXP 15 concept evident in its upright front fascia. The Torcal introduces Bentley's new signature lighting, featuring four vertical lights inspired by the Bentley Continental T, and is the first model to incorporate the brand's updated winged logo. This aesthetic is set to become the new face of Bentley, extending beyond EVs to all future models. The vehicle also boasts an impressive drag coefficient of 0.279.
A striking and innovative feature of the Torcal is the extensive use of literal cut crystals in its nose. Unhindered by the need for a traditional radiator, designers integrated 76 crystals in three different sizes, sourced from local crystal-maker Cumbria. These crystals are set behind a single plane of composite material, similar to that used in headlights. Upon unlocking the car, a captivating welcome sequence illuminates the crystals, sending beams of light ricocheting for a dazzling display. This crystal motif is echoed at the rear, where the thin taillights also feature diamond-shaped faceting within.
Further emphasizing its distinctive design, the Torcal features an “endless bonnet” strip of metal trim, available in black or silver, which extends from the nose, across the beltline, and concludes at the C-pillar, elegantly highlighting the vehicle's sizable rear haunches. Functionality is also considered, with a traditional trunk at the rear and a front trunk capable of accommodating a small carry-on suitcase. The launch also introduces two new exterior colors: Electrum Satin and Astral, enhancing the Torcal's luxurious appeal.
