Horror in Ayrshire: Care Worker Accused of Abusing Vulnerable Dementia Patient

Irvine social care worker Margaret Cavin has been officially struck off the register due to a severe and prolonged pattern of care failings and abusive behavior directed towards vulnerable patients under her supervision. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) concluded that her conduct, spanning a six-year period and occurring across two separate employments, reflected an "extremely concerning pattern of behaviour" that demonstrated a fundamental incompatibility with her role.
Among the numerous incidents detailed, one involved a dementia patient identified as 'AA'. Between December 4 and December 6, 2018, while providing personal care, Cavin was found to have shouted at the resident, asking: "Do you like getting shouted at?" or words to that effect. She further exacerbated the distress by throwing the service user’s wet underwear at them, striking their arm. At the time, Cavin was employed as a care assistant by HC-One No. 1 Limited in Irvine. The SSSC determined that these actions caused 'AA' significant distress.
A later incident, occurring on or around June 6, 2024, involved another dementia patient, referred to as 'BB'. Cavin physically struck 'BB' three times on her arm using a hoist remote. The SSSC also proved charges relating to Cavin's derogatory language used about 'BB' to a colleague between May 21 and June 6, 2024. During this period, Cavin was heard to remark that 'BB' was 'a f*****g joke' and had 'lost the plot', or similar expressions.
Further demonstrating her serious lack of empathy, Cavin was found to have made a general comment to a colleague concerning residents in her care, stating: "if they want to eat fine, if they don’t then f**k them," or words to that effect. Another specific incident on or around June 5, 2024, revealed Cavin making an inappropriate and offensive remark about resident 'BB' to a colleague, saying: "she’s playing with her f***y," or words to that effect.
The SSSC's decision notice condemned Cavin's actions, highlighting that on "multiple occasions," she used "highly disrespectful language to describe service users in your care, who live with dementia and are extremely vulnerable." The regulator stated that such speech demonstrated "a serious lack of empathy and compassion" and raised "significant concerns about your values and attitudes as a social services worker." They noted that making these comments to a new staff member undermined professional standards and set an "extremely poor example."
The SSSC emphasized that Cavin had been "entrusted by your employer, the public, and the SSSC to care for vulnerable individuals, and you had a duty to safeguard the wellbeing of those in your care." Her behavior of physically striking service users was deemed "wholly unacceptable and fundamentally incompatible with continued registration." The regulator concluded that Cavin showed "a complete disregard" for upholding the "dignity of those in her care," inflicting physical harm and shouting at individuals, representing "a serious and repeated breach of professional standards."
Given the extensive history of misconduct, the SSSC assessed the risk of repetition as "high." They firmly stated that "a reasonable member of the public would lose confidence in the social services profession, and in the SSSC as its regulatory body, if steps were not taken to prevent the risk of further harm." Consequently, Margaret Cavin’s name has been struck from the social care register, marking the end of her career in the sector.
