Honda's Long Road Ahead: Accord, Odyssey, Acura Models Face Multi-Year Delays

Honda is reportedly facing significant delays in the redesigns of several high-volume models, including the Accord, Odyssey, and HR-V, pushing major updates to 2030 and beyond. This strategic shift comes after what appears to be a costly $15.8 billion bet on electric vehicles, forcing the automaker to reassess or even cancel previously established EV plans. According to a report from Automotive News, based on an obtained supplier memo, Honda is now focused on financial recovery, requiring them to optimize every resource.

While the initial push for electric vehicles has encountered setbacks, a broader commitment to electrification, particularly through hybrid technology, remains part of Honda's long-term strategy. However, the timeline for expanding its hybrid lineup has also been pushed further into the future than originally anticipated. Next-generation versions of key models, such as the Odyssey minivan, Accord midsize sedan, HR-V compact SUV, and Acura models like the MDX and Integra, are now not expected until 2030 or later.

The Honda Odyssey minivan, in particular, faced an uncertain future, with reports indicating it was considered for temporary discontinuation. Despite increasing competition from rivals offering all-wheel-drive and hybrid options like the Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival, Honda has decided to keep the Odyssey alive for at least three more years. The next-generation Odyssey is now slated for a 2030 release as a hybrid, featuring an electrified V-6 engine and available all-wheel-drive. This same hybrid-AWD setup is also being considered for integration into the next-generation Honda Pilot.

The popular Honda Accord is also undergoing a significant transformation in its future planning. The supplier document cited by Automotive News suggests that there is no next-generation gas-only Accord in development. This could signify a transition for the midsize sedan to a hybrid-only powertrain option by early 2030, aligning with the expected end of production for the gasoline-only version in March of that year.

Other crucial models in Honda and Acura's lineup are similarly affected by these delays. The HR-V will see its current life cycle extended into the 2030s, with its major redesign now reportedly pushed back to early 2032. The Acura Integra, a relatively recent reintroduction, has been granted an additional three years in its current generation. Meanwhile, the Acura MDX luxury SUV is not expected to receive its next full redesign until early 2031.

When contacted for a statement regarding these future product plans, Honda provided a cautious response to MotorTrend. The automaker stated,
