Homeschooling Triumph: Kid Earns £5k Monthly, But Critics Still Question Parents' Choice

Jason Graystone, a self-described "wealth enthusiast" and host of the Always Free podcast, has sparked considerable debate by revealing his decision to pull both of his children out of traditional schooling at the age of 14 to homeschool them. Graystone firmly believes that conventional education often forces children to learn subjects they are not interested in, leading to disengagement and wasted time. He emphasizes his desire to guide his children toward excelling in areas they are naturally passionate about, rather than adhering to a curriculum that he considers largely "pointless" in today's world.
Graystone defends his approach by highlighting the success of his youngest son, who, after being homeschooled, pursued his interest in a creative career. His son taught himself editing and animations, eventually building a successful YouTube channel focused on teaching others these skills. By the age of 16, he was generating content like reels and YouTube shorts and, according to Graystone, was earning £5,000 a month. This financial success and job satisfaction stand in stark contrast, Graystone notes, to his son's friends who, two years later, are still pursuing GCSEs without a clear career path.
The success story extends further, as Graystone's son now works as his editor, significantly contributing to the growth of Graystone's own YouTube channel from 50,000 to half a million subscribers. Jason Graystone uses this example to reinforce his view that traditional schooling often fails to serve the needs of children today, asserting that his son's current earnings demonstrate a practical and fulfilling outcome that school might not have provided.
However, Graystone's unconventional parenting and educational choices have not been without criticism. Many people in the comments section of his TikTok and podcast were divided. Opponents questioned the viability of such an approach for all career paths, with one person asking, "That's great if you want to be a YouTuber, but what if they want to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer? That requires academic dedication that it is really hard to achieve at home." Others highlighted the lifelong relevance of core subjects like maths, science, and English, regardless of initial disinterest. Concerns were also raised about the social development aspects of schooling, with one commenter noting, "School is a time for them to grow as people and make friends they will have their whole lives." The amount of screen time involved in a creative, digital career also drew scrutiny. Despite these criticisms, Graystone remains resolute, often responding by reiterating his son's monthly earnings as a testament to the effectiveness of his alternative educational philosophy.
