Hollywood Heavyweights Tackle January 6 Drama: Penn Directs Cooper as Capitol Cop!
Sean Penn is set to direct an untitled film about a police officer present during the Jan. 6 Capitol storming, with Bradley Cooper eyed for the lead. The project at Warner Bros. faces potential political scrutiny, especially with David Ellison, known for his Trump ties, poised to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Penn, a vocal critic of Trump, will lead this film into a complex industry landscape.
Sean Penn is set to direct an untitled film project centered on the early life of a police officer who was present during the January 6 storming of the United States Capitol. Bradley Cooper is reportedly being considered for the lead role in the film, which is currently set up at Warner Bros. The real-life inspiration for the protagonist, however, has not yet been publicly identified.
Described as "an unexpected story about friendship," the film's premise appears to deliberately minimize its direct focus on the Jan. 6 events. Insiders emphasize that the project is only tangentially related to the attacks, a narrative choice likely intended to mitigate potential controversy. Despite this framing, the project's reception remains uncertain, particularly given the ongoing dynamics surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery.
The film's political undertones become more complex with the impending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by David Ellison and the team at Paramount, following the Justice Department's clearance of their merger. Ellison has openly highlighted his family's connections to Donald Trump, evidenced by a dinner he hosted for the former president and his administration in April, and his attendance at a UFC fight held at the White House on Trump's 80th birthday, an event broadcast on Paramount+, Ellison’s streaming service. This stands in stark contrast to Penn's vocal political stance, as the director has publicly referred to Trump as "an enemy of mankind."
Sean Penn brings a wealth of experience to the project, having achieved critical acclaim both as an actor and director. He is a three-time Oscar winner, including one for his role in "One Battle After Another," a film produced by Warner Bros. His other Academy Awards were for performances in "Mystic River" and "Milk." Penn’s notable acting credits also include "Dead Man Walking" and "Sweet and Lowdown." Behind the camera, Penn has directed several acclaimed films, such as "The Indian Runner," "Into the Wild," and "The Pledge." He has penned the script for this upcoming Jan. 6 film and will produce it alongside John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth under their Projected Picture Works banner. Production is slated to commence in mid-2027.
Bradley Cooper, who is being eyed for the lead, is also an accomplished director. Sean Penn himself has publicly lauded Cooper's directorial work on "A Star is Born." Cooper recently directed and starred in "Is This Thing On?" and "Maestro." His extensive acting resume features roles in films like "American Sniper," "The Hangover," and the forthcoming "Ocean’s 11" prequel, where he will co-star with Margot Robbie. The deal for this new project with Warner Bros. was facilitated by CAA Media Finance. Penn and Projected Picture Works are represented by CAA, while Cooper is represented by Range Media Partners. News of Penn’s latest directorial endeavor was initially reported by Deadline.
