Hip-Hop Mourns: Swishahouse Founder Michael '5000' Watts Passes Away at 52

Michael “5000” Watts, the influential founder of Swishahouse Records and a true pioneer of Houston hip-hop, has passed away at the age of 52. His family confirmed his death on Friday, January 30, 2026, stating that Watts transitioned “surrounded by loved ones.” The cause of death was attributed to a sudden cardiac arrest, triggered by a fatal heart rhythm known as torsades de Pointes. The family expressed deep sadness and appreciation for the public’s love and support, requesting continued prayers during this difficult time. Michael Watts is survived by his wife, Tammie Watts, his five children, and two grandchildren.
Watts’ illustrious career began at the remarkably young age of 14, evolving into a multifaceted role as a successful business owner, prominent DJ, engaging radio personality, and the visionary founder and owner of Swishahouse. He was widely regarded as a pillar in the community, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry and beyond.
In 1997, Watts established Swishahouse, a label that would fundamentally transform the landscape of hip-hop by bringing the distinctive, syrupy chopped-and-screwed style from its Houston origins to a global audience. As a DJ and superproducer, he played a crucial role in launching and nurturing the careers of numerous hip-hop stars, including Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Mike Jones, and Chamillionaire. Under his leadership, Swishahouse rapidly grew into a powerhouse record label throughout the 2000s, solidifying its place in hip-hop history.
Tributes poured in from across the hip-hop community, with figures such as Juicy J, Slim Thug, DJ Paul, Drumma Boy, and Maxo Kream honoring his memory. OG Ron C, co-founder of Swishahouse Records, emphasized Watts’ profound impact, stating that he “was more than a founder, he was a movement.” Ron C highlighted Watts’ role in defining the sound, spirit, and global influence of Houston hip-hop, expanding on the city’s chopped and screwed legacy and transforming mixtape culture into a worldwide phenomenon. He credited Watts with providing a platform for countless artists, DJs, and producers, building a brand synonymous with authenticity, independence, and cultural pride that ultimately helped put Houston on the global music map.
Prior to his passing, the Watts family and Swishahouse had revealed that Michael “5000” Watts was hospitalized due to serious health complications earlier in the week, specifically on January 28. In recent years, Watts continued to engage with his audience by hosting a night slot on Houston’s 97.9 The Box radio station, where he featured his signature Swishahouse mixes. A community event designed to honor his enduring legacy is expected to be announced shortly, allowing fans and colleagues to celebrate his immense contributions.
