Highlander Reboot BOMBSHELL: Russell Crowe Spills Ridley Scott's Secret Link to Henry Cavill!

Russell Crowe has offered insights into the forthcoming Highlander reboot, detailing director Ridley Scott's past influence on his career and his own approach to his character in the upcoming film. Crowe's involvement in Highlander was first reported by Collider in June, making him the initial name attached to star alongside Henry Cavill. Since then, the cast has expanded significantly to include other prominent actors such as Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Jeremy Irons. The highly anticipated film is now scheduled to commence production at the beginning of 2026. Directing the reboot is Chad Stahelski, widely recognized for his work on all four John Wick movies, while the screenplay is being penned by Ryan Condal, known for his contributions to House of the Dragon.
Crowe is set to portray Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, a role originally brought to life by Sean Connery in the 1986 Highlander film. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Crowe confirmed his casting as Ramirez and discussed Connery's iconic interpretation. He humorously noted how the original film explained the Spanish character's Scottish accent by stating he had previously come from Egypt. Crowe, however, affirmed his commitment to reverting the character to his authentic Spanish heritage, stating, “Chad told me, ‘If you bring me Spanish, I will take Spanish.’ So I’m gonna do Ramirez as a Spaniard. We shall see.”
Crowe further shared an anecdote from his past, revealing that he had initially intended to perform his character, Maximus, in Gladiator with a Spanish accent. However, director Ridley Scott emphatically rejected the idea, leading them to settle on what Crowe described as “Royal Shakespeare Company two pints after lunch” — an accent choice that ultimately proved successful, contributing to the film's five Academy Awards. This story illustrates the creative discussions that shape character portrayals in major productions.
The Highlander reboot currently lacks an official release date and has recently faced production challenges. Filming was originally slated to begin at the end of September but was delayed to early next year after lead actor Henry Cavill sustained an injury during training. Despite the setback, Cavill promptly returned to his fitness regimen, sharing photos of himself working out with a boot on his leg. With an extensive shooting schedule anticipated throughout much of 2026, the film is not expected to be released in theaters until 2027. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to Collider for further updates and coverage of the Highlander reboot.
