Heartbreak and Horror: Utumishi Girls Dorm Fire Claims Lives, Arson Suspects Detained Amid National Outcry

A devastating fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, has led to the deaths of at least 16 students, leaving scores injured and deeply traumatized. The incident has sparked widespread grief and anger across Kenya, with families and relatives pointing fingers at the Ministry of Education and the institution itself for the fatalities.

Relatives of the deceased have vehemently questioned the school's decision to lock students in the dormitory, directly contradicting safety recommendations outlined in the Ministry's Safety Standard Manual. George Nyakeri, who lost his niece in the blaze, expressed deep sorrow and criticized the government for failing to learn from previous fire incidents in schools. He recounted how students had confessed to being locked in by school management despite the inherent risks. Another parent, Rose Wambura, highlighted the severe trauma experienced by survivors, noting that her daughter was admitted to the hospital due to chest infections and hallucinations after escaping the inferno.

The painful process of identifying the victims and collecting DNA samples commenced at the Naivasha sub-county mortuary, where the 16 bodies were transferred. Emotions ran high among the affected families as they grappled with the enormity of the loss. Steve Maina, Red Cross coordinator in Naivasha, confirmed the transfer of bodies and the establishment of tracking and counseling desks to support the traumatized families and survivors.

In a significant development, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a full-scale homicide probe into suspected arson. Detectives have detained approximately 30 students for questioning, as growing evidence suggests the fire, which engulfed the Meline Waithera dormitory block, may have been intentionally set. Investigators are focusing on a mysterious two-hour window between 10:10 PM, when the dormitory's power supply was routinely disconnected, and 12:10 AM, when screams and smoke were first reported. Several students initially cleared to leave campus were recalled for intensive interrogation sessions.

The tragedy has reignited a sensitive national debate about unrest in Kenya’s public boarding school system, where past incidents of dormitory arson have been linked to student protests against extreme discipline, poor living conditions, or academic pressure. Public figures, including award-winning singer Wahu Kagwi and gospel artist Francy Grace, have joined the nation in mourning and expressing condolences. Wahu Kagwi, known for her advocacy on family welfare, described the incident as a profound tragedy, while Francy Grace confirmed her niece's safety, expressing gratitude for her survival.

The catastrophic fire erupted shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 28, 2026, rapidly tearing through the crowded Meline Waithera dormitory block, which housed approximately 220 students from Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4 classes. Emergency response teams from the Kenya Red Cross, police, Nakuru County disaster management, Nakuru County Fire Brigade, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), and National Youth Service (NYS) battled the blaze, containing it and assisting in rescue efforts. The fire reportedly started on the first floor between 12:45 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., with authorities alerted around 3:30 a.m. While 16 fatalities are confirmed, 79 students sustained injuries, with some remaining in critical condition due to severe burns and smoke inhalation. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and police officials continue to oversee the investigations into the exact cause of the fire. The incident has intensified calls for immediate nationwide audits of all school dormitories to prevent future catastrophes.
