Gunners Triumph! Arsenal Dominates Manchester City to Claim Community Shield Glory
Arsenal commenced the 2026/2027 season by emphatically defeating Manchester City 3-0 to claim the FA Community Shield. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard secured the Gunners' 18th title. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca lamented the early goal and missed chances, while Arsenal's Mikel Arteta addressed ongoing issues with Premier League squad registration limits.
Arsenal commenced the 2026/2027 football season in spectacular fashion, securing the FA Community Shield with a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, South Wales, on Sunday. This win marked the Gunners' 18th Community Shield title and their third triumph in the competition since 2020, including a previous victory against City in 2023 via penalties. The North London side set an immediate tone for the match, delivering a resounding performance that saw them claim the first silverware of the campaign.
The Gunners wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead within the opening seconds of the game. Just 24 seconds into the match, Ben White found Myles Lewis-Skelly, who then threaded a pass to Riccardo Calafiori inside the box. Calafiori, keeping his composure, calmly slid the ball past Manchester City's new goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had dived early. Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Christos Tzolis provided his first assist for the club, heading a Martin Odegaard cross back across goal for Kai Havertz to score with a downward header, which Donnarumma fumbled into the net. Captain Martin Odegaard then sealed the emphatic victory two minutes after the restart, collecting a pass from Tzolis, dribbling past Josko Gvardiol and rounding Donnarumma before rolling the ball into an empty net. This goal marked Odegaard’s first since December, following an injury-hit 2025/26 season.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, making his debut in the absence of Pep Guardiola who departed after 10 years, admitted the early goal significantly impacted his team's performance. "I think the goal we conceded after 25 seconds unfortunately affected the game at that moment," Maresca stated, bemoaning City's failure to convert several chances before Arsenal's second goal. He added that the team had "three or four chances to score and draw the game but unfortunately we conceded the second one and it became more complicated." Despite City's efforts, including Phil Foden testing David Raya, and Raya denying Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, Arsenal's defense held firm, securing a clean sheet. City's record signing Elliot Anderson also made his debut in midfield.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, while celebrating the victory, also highlighted challenges with squad size restrictions. He revealed that players like Gabriel Martinelli, Ethan Nwaneri, and Gabriel Jesus were left out due to these rules, stating, “It’s really sad not to have their availability. I’ve been fighting with the Premier League to extend and accommodate more players in the squad because they deserve to be in the squad.” Premier League rules currently allow teams to register 25 players aged 21 or over, with players under 21 not counting towards this limit, and 20 players named on a matchday squad. Arteta hopes for rule changes to allow more players to contribute. This win also broke Arsenal's streak of not defeating Manchester City in their previous three encounters.
With the Community Shield secured, Arsenal will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they are set to begin their title defense against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday. Manchester City, on the other hand, will play Bournemouth in their opening league fixture.
