Groundbreaking Premiere: Nepal Unveils First-Ever Sci-Fi Epic 'Eklo I'!

Nepal is set to make cinematic history with the release of "Eklo I," the nation's inaugural science fiction feature film. This groundbreaking production has secured distribution deals for both its home country and North America, marking a significant milestone for Nepali cinema. Apple Entertainment has acquired the rights for its release in Nepal, scheduled for January 1, while a limited theatrical rollout in the U.S. and U.K. will follow on January 9. The film is slated to have its world premiere on December 28 at New York's Museum of the Moving Image.
"Eklo I" boasts an international cast, with Jamie Bacon starring opposite renowned Nepali actor Pradeep Khadka. Bacon, recently seen in "Mr. Loverman" and "Dreamers," is also set to appear in Dan Fogelman's upcoming NFL drama series for Hulu. Pradeep Khadka is well-known for his roles in local hits such as "Kabaddi 4," "Prem Geet 3," and "Prakash." The ensemble cast further includes Kabita Nepali and Vijay Lama, recognized for their work in "Everest." Jamie Bacon is represented by Link Entertainment and United Agents.
Directed by Pradeep Shahi, "Eklo I" stands out not only for its genre but also for its ambitious production. Filming took place at breathtaking elevations reaching 5,400 meters in the Himalayas, approximately 500 meters below Everest Base Camp. These locations allowed the crew to capture previously unfilmed regions of the majestic mountain range. Bacon shared insights into the challenging production, stating, "This film pushed us to the limit. The locations, the altitude – nothing compares. What the Nepali crew achieved was extraordinary." Director Shahi emphasized the project's unique blend of Western and Nepali storytelling influences, venturing into new territory for the country's film industry.
The narrative of "Eklo I" is set in the year 2090, in the aftermath of a devastating global pandemic that occurred in 2030. The story follows a group of astronauts returning to Earth who make a startling discovery: a lone survivor and mysterious guardians concealed within the ancient Himalayan caves. The film's title itself, "Eklo I," holds significant meaning, as the Nepali word 'eklo' translates to 'alone' in English.
Apple Entertainment, the distributor for the film in Nepal, has been actively expanding its international distribution portfolio, with recent releases including "Avatar: Fire and Ash." The release of "Eklo I" is poised to elevate Nepali cinema's international profile and demonstrate its capacity for producing complex, globally appealing stories.
