483 Athletes Stranded After Major Karate Tournament Faces Disastrous Delay in Abuja

The 5th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament in Abuja has been significantly impacted by venue and logistical challenges, leading to a one-day postponement of the main competition.

Originally slated to commence on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the championship's competitive events were delayed until Friday. This unforeseen setback has left 483 athletes representing 18 states in Abuja, as organisers struggled to resolve critical issues concerning the venue prior to the scheduled opening.

Mr. Dave Jegede, the Technical Director of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), confirmed the delay, stating that the competition proper would now begin on Friday morning. He explained that Thursday was dedicated to reorganising the programme.

Jegede attributed the logistical difficulties to issues with the Velodrome, which he noted had recently been privatised alongside persistent electricity problems. These combined factors made it impossible for the individual kata elimination and finals to proceed as planned on Thursday.

Instead of the competition, Thursday was utilised for essential preparatory activities, including referees’ and coaches’ courses and examinations, as well as the athletes’ weigh-in and preparations for the draws.

Jegede clarified that sending the athletes home was not a viable option due to the ongoing weigh-in process and the necessity for coaches to remain in Abuja for the draws. The original programme had scheduled cadet, junior, and senior individual kata events for both male and female athletes, including eliminations and finals, to begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday.

Under the revised schedule, the tournament's competitive events will now run from Friday, August 21, through Saturday, August 22, 2026, with Sunday, August 23, designated for the departure of delegates. This tournament holds particular significance for Nigerian karate, as it serves as a crucial qualifying event for athletes aspiring to be selected for the upcoming African Karate Championship in Algeria.

The scale of the championship, involving 483 athletes and 18 states, underscores the gravity of the organisers' failure to address fundamental venue and logistical issues before the planned opening.

KFN officials are now under considerable pressure to ensure that the revised programme proceeds smoothly and without any further disruptions, thereby preventing additional inconvenience for the athletes, coaches, and officials who have travelled to Abuja for the event.
