Government Unveils Ambitious $5 Billion Plan for Economic Growth

The government of Zambia is actively pursuing a significant economic transformation, with plans to attract at least $5 billion in new investment during 2026. This ambitious initiative is strategically aimed at bolstering critical sectors including energy, mining, and pharmaceuticals, as articulated by Governance Expert Dr. Noel Chisebe. Speaking ahead of the Invest Zambia International Conference (IZIC), scheduled for July 15th to 17th, 2026, Dr. Chisebe highlighted that this targeted investment is expected to profoundly reshape the nation's economic landscape.
To foster an attractive environment for investors, the government is implementing a suite of supportive policies. These include customs duty relief specifically for solar equipment, competitive tax frameworks designed to be investor-friendly, and regulations crafted to stimulate robust growth across the identified priority sectors. Dr. Chisebe further elaborated that a primary focus is being placed on renewable energy projects, encompassing solar, wind, and biomass, with dedicated incentives aimed at strengthening the country's transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Echoing these sentiments, Governance and Human Rights Advocate Mr. Wesley Miyanda underscored the broader impact of this investment drive. Mr. Miyanda emphasized that the initiative, spearheaded by the United Party for National Development (UPND), is poised to enhance overall infrastructure development and accelerate economic diversification. He noted that the capital injection will be channeled towards crucial areas such as improving energy systems, upgrading vital transportation networks, and expanding opportunities within the mining and pharmaceutical industries. Furthermore, Mr. Miyanda stressed that the investment is expected to create new jobs and promote inclusive economic participation, with a positive ripple effect on women, youths, and persons with disabilities by providing them with greater access to economic opportunities.
