The Mbamga community, situated within the Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State, has been placed under a stringent 24-hour curfew. This decisive action by local government authorities follows a series of violent attacks that tragically resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, including security personnel, aiming to restore peace and order to the troubled region.
Tension in the Mbamga area began to escalate last Saturday after a fatal altercation occurred between a cattle herder and a farmer. This initial clash quickly triggered widespread violence, leading to significant destruction of several homes and the killing of livestock. Residents reported a severe deterioration of the security situation between Tuesday and Wednesday, as the conflict intensified and spread to nearby neighborhoods, causing further casualties and deepening the crisis.
Ibrahim Abdu, a local resident, expressed profound concern over the perceived inaction of the military’s quick response unit stationed in Gembu, the headquarters of the Sardauna Local Government Area. He voiced his frustration, stating, "I honestly do not understand why security forces are stationed here if innocent people on both sides continue to be killed for days without any enforcement of law and order." His remarks highlight the community's apprehension regarding the effectiveness of security measures amidst the ongoing violence.
In response to the escalating unrest, Mohammed Umar, the chairman of the Sardauna council area, officially declared a 24-hour curfew on Wednesday. The curfew encompasses Mbamnga, Mbara, and Geroji communities. This announcement was made through an official press statement issued by Mr. Umar’s media aide, Marvellous Heli. The statement clarified that the restriction of movement was instituted with the primary objectives of restoring calm, safeguarding lives and property, and preventing any further escalation of violence in the affected areas. The council chairperson further assured residents that security operatives had been promptly deployed to the affected communities to maintain law and order, asserting that the situation was currently under control.
This recent outbreak of violence is not an isolated event but rather the latest manifestation of deep-seated conflicts characteristic of the Mambilla Plateau region. The area has a well-documented history of unrest, including a devastating conflict escalation in June 2017, which stemmed from long-standing clashes between pastoralists and crop farmers and resulted in heavy casualties across the northeastern state. Violence re-erupted in early 2018, fueled by retaliatory attacks and cattle rustling, leaving dozens dead and displacing thousands into neighboring Cameroon or internal refugee camps.
