Ghanaian Star: Osimhen, the Most Terrifying Striker I've Ever Faced!
)
Ghanaian international centre-back Jerome Opoku has publicly declared Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as the most formidable opponent he has encountered in his professional career. Opoku, who plays for Turkish club İstanbul Başakşehir, faced Osimhen on the pitch and conveyed a profound respect for the prolific forward's abilities, highlighting the constant concentration required to defend against him.
Opoku's assessment underscores Osimhen’s exceptional talent. He elaborated on the challenge, stating, "Osimhen has made me switch on… I need to be 100%. If you give him one yard, he'll be off in behind you, so in terms of testing me and bringing the best out of me, I'd say he's been my toughest opponent." This testament comes from a defender who has battled numerous top strikers across Europe and recently helped Ghana secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he eyes a prominent role.
Victor Osimhen, a key player for Galatasaray and the Super Eagles, has been enjoying an impressive season. His stellar performances earned him a nomination for the prestigious 2025 CAF Player of the Year award. At Galatasaray, Osimhen’s impact has been immediate and significant, with the club currently leading the Turkish League table. He notably scored a brace in a recent UEFA Champions League match, bringing his total tally to five goals for the Lions this season.
The Nigerian international's rising value has also been a major talking point. Galatasaray's manager, Okan Buruk, stated unequivocally that Osimhen is worth more than the amount paid for him, while the club president has firmly asserted that the forward is not for sale, despite considerable interest from top European clubs. This indicates the high regard and strategic importance Osimhen holds within his current team.
Beyond his current challenges against elite forwards like Osimhen, Jerome Opoku also reflected on earlier stages of his career that shaped his resilient defensive style. He recounted a memorable encounter in the EFL Trophy against Adebayo Akinfenwa, highlighting the harsh physical realities of professional football. "Growing up, I remember when we played Wycombe…Adebayo Akinfenwa was up front. That was crazy, because my body wasn't even developed yet — he just put his arm on my chest and I could not move," Opoku shared.
The 27-year-old defender has openly discussed how various early-career challenges, including tough loan spells and a serious ACL injury, were instrumental in his development. Now established as a Black Stars defender, Opoku views confrontations with world-class forwards such as Osimhen not just as tests, but as opportunities that strengthen his ambition to perform at the highest level and shine on the global stage with Ghana.
