Ghana's Big Leap: E-Visa System Launch Planned for 2026
Ghana is set to launch an Electronic Visa (e-Visa) policy in the first quarter of 2026, marking a significant step in its efforts to deepen engagement with the African diaspora. This initiative aims to streamline travel to Ghana, making it easier, faster, and more affordable for visitors. The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at the conclusion of the 2025 Diaspora Summit held in Accra. This summit was a pivotal event focused on strengthening Ghana's Pan-African commitment and fostering closer ties with its global diaspora.
Under the new e-Visa regime, a special concession will be extended to Africans in the diaspora, who will benefit from reduced application fees compared to other international travellers. Mr Ablakwa clarified that the policy's primary objective is to dismantle long-standing barriers to travel, thereby encouraging more frequent visits, stimulating investment, and facilitating a deeper reconnection between the diaspora and their homeland. Furthermore, the new visa system will operate on the principle of reciprocity, meaning Ghana's visa charges will mirror the fees its citizens encounter when entering other countries.
In addition to the e-Visa plans, Minister Ablakwa also disclosed that President Mahama has issued directives to fast-track the processes for the restoration of Ghana Airways, the nation's formerly defunct national carrier. A technical committee, established by the President, is reportedly nearing the completion of its work, generating optimism for the airline's imminent revival. The Minister emphasized that the re-establishment of a national airline would not only retain travel revenues within the Ghanaian economy but also create opportunities to offer discounted fares, particularly for participants of significant national events like the Diaspora Summit.
The 2025 Diaspora Summit itself was hailed by Mr Ablakwa as a transformative moment in Ghana's relationship with its global diaspora. He highlighted that the summit signifies a crucial shift towards institutionalizing diaspora participation as a permanent and integral component of state policy. Looking ahead, the Minister stressed that the true success of the summit will be gauged by the effective implementation of its recommendations. He confirmed that follow-up actions are scheduled to commence immediately, alongside preparations for an expanded 2026 Diaspora Summit, underscoring Ghana's continued commitment to its diaspora engagement strategy.
