Genesis Unleashes Magma Racing: Track & Street Performance Redefined!
Genesis is strategically entering motorsports with its Magma Racing division in the World Endurance Championship, aiming to expand its luxury brand presence globally. This initiative seeks to leverage track performance to enhance brand appeal and introduce high-performance road vehicles, exemplified by the GV60 Magma and future diverse powertrain models.
Genesis is strategically adopting the intrinsically American concept of “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” as it continues to advance in the global luxury car market. Since its launch in the United States at the end of 2015, the brand has achieved significant success, marked by critically acclaimed vehicles such as the compact Genesis G70 sedan, the Genesis GV70 SUV, and the flagship Genesis G90, all of which have garnered MotorTrend’s Car or SUV of the Year awards. This success is further underscored by impressive sales figures, including five consecutive years of sales growth in the U.S. and over 82,000 vehicles sold last year, representing a 10 percent increase over 2024, supported by 85 dealerships nationwide.
As Genesis seeks to achieve a higher market ceiling and increase volume, it identifies motorsports as a crucial avenue for brand expansion. The South Korean automaker's participation in the Lone Star Le Mans, as part of its efforts in the FIA’s World Endurance Championship (WEC), is a pivotal step. This initiative is spearheaded by the creation of Genesis Magma Racing (GMR) and its GMR-001 hypercar racer, which debuted in the WEC this year.
Genesis’s vision for its WEC program mirrors that of traditional luxury automakers like Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz: to enter a race car developed with in-house engineering and subsequently trickle down both technology and brand cachet to road cars. The company is convinced that success in motorsports, even if just winning races or championships, will help sell cars by reflecting its core values and significantly increasing global brand awareness. This is particularly relevant given that the World Endurance Championship holds considerable popularity in markets such as France, where success in the series, or at events like Le Mans, can substantially enhance brand appeal.
Performance vehicles are a new, vital area of growth for Genesis, symbolizing the natural evolution of the brand. The GV60 Magma stands as the brand’s first opportunity for consumers to experience a fully performance-tuned SUV from its specialized division. This high-performance EV was prominently displayed in the paddock at the Lone Star Le Mans, offering fans and VIPs a direct touchpoint with Genesis's performance aspirations.
Looking ahead, Genesis plans to offer a variety of powertrains for its future Magma products, including internal combustion, full electrification, and hybrid models. The Magma GT concept, which features a 3.2-liter turbocharged V-8 engine derived from the GMR-001, remains a compelling possibility. While currently a concept, Genesis leadership, including Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke, hints at the brand’s commitment to exploring its market viability. Regardless of whether it’s the GT or another performance-oriented model like a hotted-up GV70 SUV, Magma vehicles are not intended for high-volume sales. Instead, they are designed to serve as
