Audi is set to revive its iconic A2 as the all-electric A2 e-tron, positioning it as the brand's most efficient electric vehicle to date. Originally a groundbreaking all-aluminum car from 1999 to 2005, the new 2027 Audi A2 e-tron, while built on the VW Group's primarily steel MEB platform, aims for unparalleled efficiency. Despite its impressive features, including up to 401 miles of WLTP range and vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, this tiny electric hatch will not be available in U.S. showrooms.
The A2 e-tron boasts an exceptional 164 mpg-e efficiency rating on the WLTP scale, a testament to its advanced aerodynamic and mechanical design. Its sleek profile achieves a claimed drag coefficient of just 0.24, thanks to a sloped roofline with a ducktail spoiler, a largely enclosed undercarriage, specially designed slick wheels, and "gap reducers" integrated into the wheel-arch trim that deploy to minimize tire gaps. Further contributing to its aerodynamic prowess are wing-shaped haptic electric door release handles, all meticulously crafted to cheat the wind and maximize efficiency.
Beyond efficiency, sustainability is a core principle for the new A2 e-tron. Its structure incorporates 300 components made from recycled steel, aluminum, and various plastics, highlighting Audi's commitment to eco-conscious manufacturing. However, as with most electric vehicles, the A2 e-tron is not lightweight, with all variants tipping the scales at over 2 tons.
Prospective buyers will have a choice of three battery packs and four distinct powertrains, all featuring rear-wheel drive. The efficiency champion, positioned on the second rung of the price ladder, pairs a 61-kWh LFP pack with a motor delivering 188 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, achieving the remarkable 164 mpg-e WLTP rating and a range of 320 miles. This efficiency is highly competitive, notably close to the Tesla Model 3 long-range RWD model's 169 mpg-e rating on the same scale. The base model features a 125-hp/258-lb-ft motor and the 51-kWh pack, offering a 153 mpg-e rating and 263 miles of range. For the ultimate range, a 228-hp/258-lb-ft model with the 84-kWh NMC pack provides an impressive 401 miles of WLTP range and a 151 mpg-e efficiency. The most powerful variant comes with a 322-hp/402-lb-ft motor, capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.7 seconds, while still maintaining 391 miles of range and 151 mpg-e.
Adding to its advanced capabilities, all A2 e-trons are Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) ready. They can power external devices using onboard outlets and a charging port adaptor. Furthermore, in specific European markets like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the A2 e-tron can function as a home battery. With suitable DC wall boxes, it can feed stored energy back into the household grid through Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology, offering a new dimension of energy management for owners.
